As you may have seen, a few weeks back I attended Balticon, near Baltimore, Maryland. While there, I was lucky enough to meet and spend some time hanging out with this year’s Compton Crook Award winner T. C. McCarthy.

Mr. McCarthy’s The Subterrene War Trilogy begins with the book Germline, the title that won him this year’s award. The story follows an imbedded journalist that ends up in over his head, in the middle of a war for natural resources in Kazakhstan. The second book, Exogene, follows Catherine, a genetically engineered super soldier, as she fights in that same war. The third book, due out in August of this year, is Chimera. This story follows a third character, Stan Resnick, as he attempts to reclaim stolen and escaped genetics (super soldiers) before hostile foreign governments can unlock their secrets.

Mr. McCarthy did two readings while at the convention. The first was from Germline and the second was from Exogene. I was able to attend both readings, but forgot my camera in my room for the first reading. However, I was able to film the second. The following is chapter four of Exogene, read by the author, with a bit of background to set the scene. I hope you enjoy it!

For more information on the The Subterrene War Trilogy and other upcoming titles, you can visit T. C. McCarthy’s website and follow him on Twitter. Germline and Exogene are available in stores now. Chimera is due out August 1, 2012.
