The Silencing of the North (giveaway detail)

And maybe send someone home with an ebook. Or an audiobook. Or bragging rights.

To celebrate the release of The Silencing of the North by G. R. Matthews on January 29, 2026 we are doing a giveaway. But we are not doing it the boring way, so you’ll have to get (a bit) creative!

You can win one prize only, and there are three very different options, depending on where you think you would survive longest. Or fail most spectacularly.

Choose wisely.

The Silencing of the North (cover)

You wake up in the clan lands of the North.

Winter is coming. The Empire is marching on the clans. Everyone looks tired, armed, and deeply unimpressed by your existence.

“The castle can withstand a siege,” Mathe said, looking to Tavien, who nodded in response.

“Aye, it can,” Gawen said. “Stone can survive the cut of a sword, the stab of a dagger, or the point of an arrow. It’ll be scarred and bruised, but it will stand strong. It’s the people inside who are not so strong, who depend upon water and food for life. They will starve, illness will come, plague even, as it does in every siege, and they will die.”

You are offered one role to justify why you should not be immediately sent to die in the snow.

Which do you choose?

Examples:

  • the person who knows a secret way into the storehouse
  • the one in charge of morale speeches, despite being terrible at them
  • the cousin who is technically related to someone important, probably

Comment with your chosen role if you want to win The Silencing of the North.

A Good Day to Die (cover)

You wake up in Rawlins’s world.

You have no allies. You are already bleeding, though you are not sure why. Rawlins is nearby, and he is absolutely not here to help you.

“There were three people left standing and a quick glance around confirmed it was the right three. At least from my perspective. The Guild might view it differently.”

To survive even ten minutes, you may take one completely ridiculous weapon.

Not useful.
Not sensible.
Just delightfully stupid.

Examples:

  • a furious goose with boundary issues
  • a bag of cursed coins that attract thieves instantly
  • A chunk of mouldy cheese

Comment with your ridiculous weapon if you want to win A Good Day to Die.

Corin Hayes Omnibus (cover)

You wake up in an underwater city.

The pressure is crushing. Your suit is beeping in a way that feels personal. Corin Hayes is present, grumpy, sarcastic, and already halfway through a drink.

“Stubborness isn’t a choice, it’s a way of life.”

You are offered one coping mechanism to get through the day.

Examples:

  • aggressive sarcasm
  • denial
  • pretending this is all part of a paid training exercise

Comment with your coping mechanism if you want to win the Corin Hayes Omnibus audiobook (and specify if you want a UK or US code).

  • Comment once, either on the blog post or directly on our social media posts, answering the right prompt depending on which prize you want
  • You can win one prize only, either an ebook or an audiobook code

We will gather all entries, consult the Hat of Questionable Luck, and pick winners.

The giveaway runs from January 28th thru 31st.

Winners will be announced shortly after, and the file or code distributed via email or DM, depending on where the comment was made/privacy settings.

Come for the giveaway.

Stay to read everyone else’s terrible survival strategies & coping mechanisms.

May chance favour the brave, or at least the entertaining.

By Julia Kitvaria Sarene

Julia Kitvaria Sarene, a Munich native with an unmistakable love for all things fantasy, spent a solid 21 years working as a bookseller. During that time, she became a veritable wizard of book recommendations, guiding countless customers to their next literary adventure. In fact, if you ever walked into a bookshop and heard a voice telling you, “You’ll love this one,” you were probably in her domain. Her heart beats for fantasy novels, but don’t try to talk her into romance. She’s far too busy exploring epic worlds where dragons are more common than love triangles. As a reviewer for Fantasy Faction, Julia brings her enthusiasm and humor to older books as well as the latest fantasy releases, trying to help readers navigate the realm of swords, magic, and supernatural wonders. When she’s not nose-deep in a book or battling the occasional villainous creature on paper, Julia can be found out in the wilds, either running, hiking, or practicing traditional archery. Yes, she’s one of those rare individuals who can probably lose an arrow while discussing the latest fantasy tome. (Loose as in go looking for it, rather than shoot, as she has much more love than talent for archery.) Her adventure doesn’t stop there, she’s also a proud owner of a cute black rescue dog who’s probably the only one who truly understands the complexities of her ever-growing book collection. And if you think her book obsession is a problem, think again. Julia’s collection has reached legendary proportions. She buys more books than any one person can read in a lifetime. No such thing as “too many” books in her world. Since her eyesight is on the decline (a tragic side effect of loving books a little too much), she’s a devoted fan of audiobooks, embracing the power of storytelling in every possible format. So, whether she’s running through forests, reviewing fantasy novels, or playing with Galli, Julia is living proof that life is too short to not enjoy a good adventure, be it in the real world or between the pages of a fantastical story.
