Welcome to my world, where the line between the living and the dead is as thin as a whisper. I’m Nick Holleran, your not-so-average private investigator.
Years ago I died and came back to life, and now I know the truth. Hell is real. We’re all living it. I’ve seen things that would make your skin crawl and your heart race. Ghosts, demons, fallen angels—you name it, I’ve faced it.
This collection brings together all my cases, from the dark alleys of Haven to the depths of Hell itself.
So, if you’re ready to walk the line between the living and the dead, join me in “Hell In Haven” the Nick Holleran Case Files. Just remember, in my world, nothing is ever as it seems.
Nick Holleran is the main character in an Urban Fantasy series I liked in book one, but became addicted to in the later books.
Now you can get extra lucky, and get all of them together, in one big omnibus! (Currently even free in KU, you can find it here)
I’ll leave you with my reviews for the books, highly recommended!
Dead Man Walking by David Green is a really good urban fantasy / noir detective story I enjoyed a hell of a lot! (Not intended, but actually a fitting pun, now I wrote it down…)
Charon wheezes, and it takes a while to register that I’ve made the creep laugh. Didn’t think it possible. I fight the urge to cover my ears as his croaking continues, like the sound of gravestones rubbing together.
The main character Nick once died, but has been brought back to life, by CPR and modern medicine, not by magic. But since his first death he can now see ghosts and other supernatural elements, just as anyone else who has previously died, but it didn’t stick.
The way our normal world and the more magical bits are interwoven worked quite well, and I was happy to explore more of “hell” along with the main character.
A definite plus for me was the strong friendships and loyalties between characters.I personally could have done without the romance angle, but at least there’s absolutely no hot loins or the typical drama coming along with it. In later books it’s all settled, and I dint mind it anymore
She’s also a capable, full person herself, and not just a romance angle for the MC. They are just two people who like each other, but past trauma and the state of the world is in their way. I liked how they managed to be friends and adults about it all though, so that made it a lot more palatable for me. None of the “I hate him, no I love him, no he’s the worst” or such.
I adore some of the side characters, and am really happy to hopefully read more about them in follow up stories!
Especially as there are so many mysteries left and little seeds along the way, you can’t help but wonder what will happen next, and how it all relates to each other.
For a quick and easy read, this still has enough depth to be a very entertaining and satisfying read!
I dream of Scottish terriers chasing me around a forest, yipping and yapping, while Clint Eastwood drinks Budweiser straight from a keg, laughing at my expense while a man I identify as God wrestles Lucifer in the mud.
I’ve had weirder dreams, but not many.
One Life Left easily knocked it out of the park. It improved on all the tiny niggles I had with book one, and will go straight on my favourite Urban Fantasy shelf!
The characters are much more rounded this time around, and I *adored* the family dynamic in here! Nick really grows into his role of impromptu dad to a teenage ghost, the wobbly relationship drama is over and we have a steady couple, and plenty of strong friendships.
I especially loved how people are accepted as they are in this friend circle / found family, and are taken seriously. The daily life really felt realistic and well done, when kids in adult books often feel weird or artificial.
There’s a good murder mystery, plenty of action, a lot of Nick getting himself in all sorts of trouble, old and new friends and adversaries, a lot of humour and banter as well as the hint of even more to come…
And as an extra bonus for me, there’s a bit of ? Christmas.
A Shadow over Haven is another fantastic instalment in a series set in hell – on earth.
Nick Holleran is a main character who I immediately clicked with, especially for his sass and sarcasm! He’s prone to just run into every situation head first, and hopefully a plan will come along at some point. I enjoy his voice so very much, and while I want to shake him every so often, I can always understand why he does things. In this part of the story, he gets his hands on a very powerful relic, which he had to keep safe, all while not falling into its thrall…
I care a lot for Nick and all those dear to him, so it felt like coming home.
Spending time with favourite characters again, be it his kinda adopted ghost daughter, his girlfriend who might not be magical, but well able to kick ass or the bar owner who won’t be messed about. Then there’s also the ones who I find deeply intriguing, but am still quite wary about – Lucifer himself as well as Death, to name but a few.
They all gained even more depth, and boy do I need the next book right now, as it ends on quite the helldangler. Luckily he’s a quick writer, so the next one will hopefully be out in spring.
If you like fast paced urban fantasy, without a focus on romance, instead all about friendships and (found) family as well as plenty of action, banter and intrigue, you have to read these!
