The 2014 Locus Awards were announced yesterday and there were some very excellent books on the list. As I said in the article I wrote up, some categories were harder to pick a possible winner for than others (although I did give it a go!). What I thought would be fun would be to pick four titles below four pounds for readers looking to check out some Locus nominated titles without spending masses of cash. I’m basing my chosen books on what I’ve heard, what I’ve read and what I believe has well-rounded appeal.
The Coldest Girl in Cold Town – £3.99
Tana lives in a world where walled cities called Coldtowns exist. In them, quarantined monsters and humans mingle in a decadently bloody mix of predator and prey. It’s an eternal party, shown on TV 24 hours a day – gorgeous, glamorous, deadly! Because, once you pass through Coldtown’s gates, you can never leave…
Ancillary Justice – £3.99
Space opera for fans of Iain M. Banks and Michael Cobley – a warship is destroyed but her artificially intelligent mind remains in a single human body – why was she destroyed and will she find revenge?
The Ocean at the End of the Lane – £2.99
A novel about memory and magic and survival, about the power of stories and the darkness inside each of us, created by the unparalleled imaginative power of Neil Gaiman…
The Golem and the Djinni – £3.85
A magical, unforgettable story; unlikely friends whose tenuous attachment challenges their opposing natures – until the night a terrifying incident drives them back into their separate worlds. But a powerful threat will soon bring Chava and Ahmad together again, challenging their existence and forcing them to make a fateful choice.
And that’s your lot! Let us know if you pick any up and what you think of those you do 🙂
