The zombie apocalypse was just the beginning of vampire hunter Emily’s problems. Now she must team up with Death himself in this thrilling apocalyptic adventure series!

It’s been two years since the zombie uprising devoured 99% of the world’s population—and the vampires have come out of the shadows to claim the spoils. It’s Emily Campbell’s job to destroy vampire communes and rescue their human herds, but when a mission goes wrong, and she faces certain undeath, she would rather die than ever let them transform her. The problem is that when she makes a desperate suicide attempt, not only does the Grim Reaper fail to take her life—he also somehow loses all his powers in the process.

Now neither alive nor dead, Emily is stranded in the California desert with Death himself. She has heard the remnants of human civilization are developing a cure that could make her alive again in New York—all the way on the other side of the vampire- and zombie-swarmed continent. Only with Death’s help does she have a chance to complete the journey.

But without his powers, Death is mired in a crisis of his own. And he is not used to having company.

The Company of Death is set in a post-apocalyptic USA (I’m from Aus and I can’t remember which city sorry). Vampires have taken over and have created a bunch of zombies as not everybody bitten turns into a vampire. There are survival groups trying to develop a cure for the zombie disease, there are cults run by vampires where humans are ‘protected’ as long as they are prepared to pay with blood and a whole host of other players including Death, Father Time, The Four Horseman (Death included) and a combat robot with an illegal AI personality.

One of the main characters, Emily, is part of the human survivalist groups who are trying to buy time for the human stronghold to develop a cure. Their job is to ‘clean up’ towns of zombies so people. They have a plan to infiltrate one of the vampire cults which goes wrong and the story progresses from there.

I will say I did not particularly love any of the characters. I usually adore when Death is a character but even he didn’t earn much affection from me, though I approved of his reaction to ‘them’ stealing his horse. I would have liked to see a bit more personality or banter rather than taking the dark and brooding mythical being to the limit. Another main character was a 20 year old young adult, who I found annoyingly immature through much of it – though I’m forgiving some of that due to his age. I think my favourite character overall was ‘Carol’ who I will let you meet by yourself.

So this was a blind read (as I am wont to do). The problem is I don’t like zombies… so that put a big dampener on my enjoyment as its obviously a main plot point – my bad. HOWEVER I did still enjoy some elements of this one, particularly the strange variety of characters. I think for those who like post-apocalyptic worlds with zombies and vicious vampires, instead of the current trend of romanticised vamps, it could be worth a read. I also think (hope) that this is a series that improves with each book.

Hi there! I am joining the team and will be sharing my fantasy/sci-fi reads and reviews. Book related things to know about me: - Common sense suggests my TBR will far out live my predicted lifespan unless I discover the key to immortality... Challenge accepted! - Chronically sleep deprived due to my lack of self control when it comes to reading and small human responsibilities - I'm a confirmed mood reader and I embrace the chaos that creates to my reading plans - My favourite genre is Fantasy though I'm having some success branching out into Sci-fi and I will dabble in thriller, crime and mystery - Predominantly an audiobook consumer so I'll probably mention narration in my reviews - Amateur graphic creator on Canva (mostly of the bookish variety) I absolutely thrive on talking about books so I'm more than happy to be contacted to discuss my reviews or suggestions you might have for books I should read next. I'm fairly active on Facebook, BlueSky (@powjay.bsky.social), Goodreads and Storygraph.
