The Lies of Locke Lamora has been hailed by many readers as one of the best fantasy novels of the decade. Its sequel Red Seas Under Red Skies gave an excellent depiction of Scott’s ability and desire to do more than simply write the same book over and over again (as so many other fantasy writers have done in the past). Therefore, fantasy readers across the globe have been eagerly awaiting the announcement of Scott’s third book, The Republic of Thieves. However, after five and a half years of waiting (and it having appeared on our ‘most anticipated’ list three years in a row!) many fans had reasonably stopped asking “When the heck is it coming out!?”
Then, out of nowhere Scott Lynch stops by Fantasy-Faction’s forums and makes the following reply to a topic called “What books haven’t you been able to finish?”
The Republic of Thieves.
(I am so sorry. I simply couldn’t resist. In the immortal words of my grandfather: “If you can’t laugh at yourself, you’re an asshole.”)
Cheers,
SL
P.S. It ain’t the finishing that’s the issue, it’s the editing and the miserable damned anxiety attacks.
P.P.S. I’m working on both as you read this.
P.P.P.S. None of this is the fault of my editors or publishers. They have been patient and steadfastly helpful during a long difficult period of my life.
Then, yesterday, I was called by a couple of ‘press people’ who told me that there was some big news coming: that the release date for The Republic of Thieves was being decided as we spoke, as Scott had last week handed in the completed work (subject to the proofing process and such). I can’t say much more than that for now, but if you head over to Gollancz’s blog, (after 1:00pm) you’ll be able to read all about it and see that all important release date!
BUT WAIT!!!! Before you go, I’ve got an equally cool announcement:
In an hour’s time, Scott Lynch will be stopping by Fantasy-Faction with an exclusive message to Fantasy-Faction readers.
I’d like to say WELCOME BACK TO THE GENRE, Scott! We missed you mate and I hope you’re feeling better in yourself. Everyone here at Fantasy-Faction is behind you (staff and visitors) and grateful for the wonderful world you’ve given us. You can be sure that we’ll be the first in the queue at bookshops and first hunting you down to receive handshakes, hugs and high-fives when you land in the UK.
In the mean time, readers: you can read our interview with Scott here, an exclusive reading of “The Mad Baron’s Mechanical Attic”, a prequel to The Lies of Locke Lamora, here, or visit our forums to chat about Scott’s work here.
UPDATE: Check out Scott’s message to Fantasy-Faction here!

This is the best news I’ve heard this year!
Absolutely fantastic news – ridiculously excited and off to hunt out my copies of LIES and RED SEAS for rereading in anticipation! FYI Marc, the link to the forums isn’t working.
Thanks! Fixed it. 🙂
