Scott Lynch’s Fourth Gentleman Bastard book coming in 2014!

In what can only be described as super-fricken-awesome news, Scott Lynch has told Fantastical Imaginations that The Thorn of Emberlain is on schedule for a 2014 Q3 release. Here’s what Scott said:

“My next book, THE THORN OF EMBERLAIN, ought to be out in the fall of 2014. [It’s] the fourth book in the Gentleman Bastard sequence [and] picks up about half a year after The Republic of Thieves and finds Locke Lamora and Jean Tannen trying to get back on their feet with a major con. They’re trying to sell the services of a non-existent mercenary company to the besieged city-state of Emberlain, hoping to escape with the hiring fees before the chaos of the Vadran civil war overruns Emberlain. Naturally, things don’t go according to plan…

Although this comes as a pleasant surprise, I guess it shouldn’t… Scott told SuVuDu upon the release of The Republic of Thieves that: “The next book (Number four!) in the Gentleman Bastard sequence is The Thorn of Emberlain, and I’m already hard at work on it. I’ve also got a pair of novellas, The Mad Baron’s Mechanical Attic and The Choir of Knives, that will bridge the time between The Republic of Thieves and Thorn. Those will be available from Subterranean Press. I’ve also got several short stories slated for publication or in the works… one for the Clockwork Universe: Steampunk vs. Aliens anthology, and one already written for the big Gardner Dozois/George R.R. Martin theme anthology Rogues, available some time in 2014.”

So, with such a long wait between Red Seas and Republic, it looks like Scott is looking to make it up to us with a ton of cool stuff in 2014. It’s nice to have one of our favourite authors back writing regularly, right? 🙂

    1. Haha, not looking hard enough!

In a blog post Scott said that the book is ‘very deeply underway’ and that the manuscript is going to be handed in ‘only a bit later’ than everyone had planned for. With the manuscript originally being due in mid-2014, Scott feels assured that the book will be only a few months late (so by the end of 2014), meaning we can now expect the book to be on shelves in the first quarter of 2015 – all going well.

      Hope that helps,

      Marc 🙂
