Queen Elizabeth II passes on the Iron Throne

QueenThe opportunity for what could have been the best photo… ever has been lost.

From the moment it was announced that The Queen of England would be visiting the set of The Game of Thrones, the British Media and fans were debating whether or not she would sit on that famous Iron Throne (as so many of us have).

The trip was in Belfast and some British media outlets were so excited about the possibility of the Queen on the Iron Throne photo that they done a live text-based commentary of the event. As the Queen entered the ‘throne room’ the journalists could barely contain their excitement, writing:

The Queen is so close to sitting on that throne.

Come on Queen, just do it… sit on the throne.

How great would it be.

However, despite seeming to enjoy checking out the throne, the Queen declined the offer to sit on it and have her photo taken. Likely this was on the advice of her PR team. Relationships with Ireland and the UK have been very rocky since a part of Ireland sought independence. I can see some logic against the Queen taking a seat on a Throne in the country – even being a fictional throne.

Whilst on set, the Queen still got to meet cast members such as Maisie Williams (Arya Stark), Lena Headey (Queen Cersei Lannister), Kit Harington (Jon Snow) and Conleth Hill (Lord Varys). In addition, so that she didn’t forget her trip, she was presented with a replica throne to take home to Buckingham Palace, which she will hopefully place somewhere near her real throne. After the event, Maisie Williams, who plays Arya Stark, offered a possible reason for the Queen’s discussion: “(The Queen) kept commenting on how uncomfortable the throne looked, that was funny.”

Yes, it seems that everyone wants to sit on Westeros’s iron throne, except for the true Queen. Here is a brief video of the Queen’s visit:

Of course, users of Social Media reacted badly to the Queen’s decision. Fans were disappointed the Queen didn’t indulge them with the photo they’d all hoped for since hearing the Queen was to visit the set. Many even came up with their own photoshopped versions (some were very good, others were terrifyingly dark!). What do you guys think? Should the Queen have given us that photo?

  1. I can only assume she had noted the propensity of the Iron Thrones’ inhabitants to lose their heads. Sticking ot the English throne is much safer.
