Harry Potter surfaces after 7 years M.I.A.

Harry-PotterWe haven’t seen Harry Potter for seven years – when he was waving goodbye to his children as they boarded the Hogwarts train at the end of The Deathly Hallows. But, this month, fans are to receive an update on the world’s most famous wizard.

In an original piece of writing for the Pottermore website, J.K. Rowling writes in the voice of Rita Skeeter (the no-good journalist) covering Harry Potter’s reunion with Ron, Hermione and the rest of Dumbledore’s Army for the final of the 2014 Quidditch World Cup. Thankfully, it seems Harry is still Harry, although at 34 years old he is greying somewhat. He still wears his signature round glasses and has a new scar, this time on his cheekbone, suggesting he hasn’t settled down just yet. Indeed, it is hinted that the cut came as a result of Potter’s work as an Auror – an “elite unit of specialist officers trained to apprehend Dark Wizards”.

What I found exciting and promising – as someone with hope that J.K. hasn’t totally discounted the idea of writing about Harry again one day – is that Skeeter reveals her thoughts that “the Chosen One” is “embroiled in fresh mysteries that will one day explode upon us all, plunging us into a new age of terror and mayhem”. It suggested to me that J.K. has at least thought about what Potter got up to after leaving Hogwarts.

As well as Harry, Ron and Hermione we catch up with Ginny, Neville, Luna and various other characters too. I enjoyed hearing about the trouble and mischief the kids are getting into – especially the wild Master Lupin… but I won’t spoil anything else for you. Head over to Pottermore (when the servers get back up after taking a pounding) or visit Today to read the whole thing for yourselves.

I think that was just Rita being Rita. As an Auror, Harry deals with Dark wizards and witches, but there’s not going to be another Dark Lord any time soon.
