Not long ago we announced that Angry Robot had acquired a new novel from our very own contributor, Dan Hanks! You can read the interview with him here, but first we have another announcement.
Angry Robot has given us first dibs on revealing the awesome cover for said book, which has an equally awesome title: Captain Moxley and the Embers of the Empire!
For those who missed our first announcement, here is the book’s summary:
In post-war 1952, the good guys are supposed to have won. But not everything is as it seems when ex-Spitfire pilot Captain Samantha Moxley is dragged into a fight against the shadowy US government agency she used to work for.
Now, with former Nazis and otherworldly monsters on her trail, Captain Moxley is forced into protecting her archaeologist sister in a race to retrieve two ancient keys that will unlock the secrets of a long-lost empire—to ensure a civilisation-destroying weapon doesn’t fall into the wrong hands. But what will she have to sacrifice to save the world?
Alternated history? Check. Monsters and secret government agencies? Check. The promise of fantasy-flavored, Indiana Jones-type adventure? Double check!
The only thing that could make this any cooler, would be a super amazing cover…
Once again, Angry Robot has knocked it out of the park! Not only would I love to read this book, I would also love to watch this movie!
We have interesting cast of characters who look equal parts suave and snarky. Taking center stage above her warplane is the titular Captain Moxley looking very much ready for anything. Including what looks like a high speed bus chase through the desert!
Behind them all lurks the face of a man, or maybe a monster, one evil eye covered by a mysterious gem hung inside a golden crescent moon. Skeletal arms reach out to pull our characters into the darkness.
I love how the artist, Daniel Strange, showed so much movement in this piece: The plane and the bats flying towards us, the grasping arms reaching out from their caves, the chase scene at the bottom. Non-stop action is woven into every inch of this cover! And the sepia tones really drive home the classic adventure style, while the saphire blue of the gem adds interest and mystery, bringing your eye back to the top after the whirlwind of images draws you all around the cover.
Huge congrats to Dan once again, and thanks to Angry Robot for letting us do yet another amazing cover reveal! Captain Moxley and the Embers of the Empire is due out in the fall of this year! If you would like to learn more about it you can visit Dan’s website and follow him on Twitter!
That’s one amazing cover! Adding it to my TBR list! Thanks for sharing Jennie!
