Kim Stanley Robinson’s Mars Trilogy heading to TV

I can’t be the only person thinking there isn’t enough Sci-Fi on television these days (we miss you Star Trek…), so I won’t be the only one excited to hear that yet another Science-Fiction show has been picked up by a major network.

This time the Science Fiction show is ‘Mars’ based on the hugely successful novels by Kim Stanley Robinson that follows man’s attempt to colonize and terraform the red planet. Spike TV who will be airing the sci-fi drama have said that it will “focus on the core question at the heart of the novels — what is it to be human when we are no longer of earth? Are we not then Martians?”

For those unfamiliar, the three novels — Red Mars (1993), Green Mars (1994), and Blue Mars (1996), picked up Nebula and Hugo Awards and are widely regarded as some of the finest books written on the subject, and regularly listed in ‘Top Science-Fiction Books’ lists.

Excitingly, Spike TV will be partnering up with producer Vince Gerardis (co-executive producer of Game of Thrones) to develop the series.

Sharon Levy, Spike TV’s executive vice president of original series, acknowledged this central question, saying: “This series shines a light onto many views of what it means to be human — and asks if can we sustain our humanity under incredible duress.”

“There are many homes for large canvas television these days,” Gerardis said in a statement. “It inspires me that Sharon has offered her network as home for this and provided a canvas for me to bring the world created in these books to the screen.”

SFF fans already have a lot to look forward to over the next few years; Shannara and Dragonriders of Pern recently having been announced.
