Fantasy-Faction.com has been open just six months…hard to believe isn’t it?
Much to our delight, Fantasy-Faction was able to attract 33 staff members within the first three months; an incredible amount for such a new site. It is thanks to these individuals that the site has been the success it has of course.
In the three months since they have been involved; we have interviewed people like: Joe Abercrombie, Douglas Hulick, Guy Gavriel Kay, China Mieville, Mark Lawrence, Rowena-Cory-Daniells, Mark Lawrence and not to mention one upcoming with my favourite author: Peter V. Brett. We have published just shy of 150 articles that range from games of bingo through to reviews of classics and extending to books not published for another year. It has been a HUGELY exciting time for the founder of the website and everyone else involved.
As things continue to get bigger and the site more popular though, time has come to share the work load!
So what does that mean? Basically an Assistant Editor position has become available.
Assistant Editor Position
What is involved?
E-mails
I get around 10-50 emails a day, depending what is going on and where. The assistant editor would have access to this email account and we could work together to answer everybody who gets in touch. The majority of emails I get are from the friendly staff.
Social Networking
I have worked hard to build the Twitter account for Fantasy-Faction. In six months we now have around 4000 followers, which is some achievement. We also have a Goodreads group and a Facebook Group, but I have neglected these in favour of the Twitter, simply as I’d had more experience with them. If the assistant editor could help with the Facebook/Goodreads accounts that would be great. Starting topics, gaining hits, publishing news and so on!
Content Management
We want to continue publishing one article a day. That is around 30/31 articles a month and with all our staff members it is easily possible. The hard part though is managing everything that comes in and getting things arranged so they come in at the right time. I have tried to make a calendar in the past, but failed so maybe help looking at how we could get a bit more efficient. 🙂
Also, posting the articles on the site, which isn’t too difficult, but WordPress experience or at least being willing to learn WordPress would be good!
General Visitor Interaction
Well we have 300-1000 visitors a day, all dependant on what we publish and how much we tweet it and who retweets it. Our members really are amazing people who really, really love fantasy and one of my favourite things to do is talk to them. Actually, I probably spend too much time talking to them (if you were to ask my boss/partner! :D). However, it is an essential part of this job on offer. Speaking with our users and finding out what they want, what they are enjoying, what isn’t working for them. Generally making yourself known.
– – –
Yes, it’s exciting, BUT…PLEASE…PLEASE…PLEASE…take time to consider what you will be committing to before you send in your application. It takes a special person to take this amount of work on without any kind of monetary reward. You will be happy instead with the fact that you are becoming part of the fantasy community and helping providing thousands of like-minded fantasy fans with a resource they can enjoy. It certainly is a great thing to put on your C.V. though, should publishing or content management or marketing be one of your future ambitions. If you decide that it is something for you… I look forward to hearing from you and with your assistant taking the site forward! 🙂
