Want to Write for Fantasy-Faction?

Hey guys,

We’ve got a couple of staff positions just opened up for HUGE fantasy fans who love writing articles or have a knack for reviews.

About Fantasy-Faction

Bookstore-300x209We were formed in December 2010 and in just over 3 years we’ve managed to amass a loyal fan-base resulting in 3000 average hits a day, gain 28,500 twitter followers, write 1400+ articles/reviews and interview some of the biggest names in fantasy fiction (including authors such as Robin Hobb, Guy Gavriel Kay, Joe Abercrombie, Trudi Canavan, Peter V. Brett, Scott Lynch, Brandon Sanderson, Richard Morgan, Mira Grant and many others besides…), we even ran our own signing event with Joe Abercrombie, Myke Cole & Peter V. Brett (I know, I know – I still can’t believe it happened either!). The quality and quantity of our content has seen us win the Reddit award for best Fantasy website and be nominated for British Fantasy and Goodreads awards, among others.

Why Write For Us?

Writers on Fantasy-Faction write to be part of the community, to help us with our aim of promoting the genre and to share their work / put something on their C.V. So I’ll be honest, right away, and tell you that we don’t pay. However, should you enjoy writing and reviewing books – reveling in the idea of your writing being read by thousands of people – Fantasy-Faction could be the forum for you to get your work seen. We’d never claim to be responsible for anyone else’s success, but writers at Fantasy-Faction have gone on to intern and earn full time positions in publishing and we’ve even had one member of our team go on to feature in the Writers of The Future anthology!

Excitingly, publishers have been using quotes from Fantasy-Faction on their promotional materials and on the covers of their books; authors have been linking to us through their blogs and twitter profiles on an almost daily basis; and we’ve even had newspapers and literary magazines quote us too – we really do love beginning part of this huge, friendly, rewarding community :)

I’m still interested! Give me even more details!

If you would indeed like to write for us, we accept articles and reviews between 800 and 1500 words :) Articles can be about anything relating to fantasy – perhaps fun articles (e.g. top 10 fantasy cliches), scholarly articles (e.g. Where the lore of Elves came from), writing advice (e.g. How to make a realistic hero), and so on. We never make recommendations on what to write for staff as we like to allow our team to come up with ideas and run with them. Write what you’d love to write about and at very least you’ve spent hours doing something you enjoy rather than forcing something together we’ve demanded, right? :) In terms of reviews, we are especially interested in recruiting readers who try to stay at the forefront of releases – i.e. people who are reading books recently released. We do accept reviews of older books or books you intend to reread, but we’d ask that if you review these types of books that you do so in greater depth so as to give our readers a reason to read your review over the many others that undoubtedly already exist.

Summary of content we are currently looking for

  • Reviews (new releases or especially in-depth reviews on older titles)
  • Educational Articles (e.g. character types, types of magic, settings, etc)
  • Spotlight Articles (e.g. a look at the writing career of a specific author or series)
  • Fun Articles on all things fantasy (e.g. Top 10 Cliches, Fantasy survival guide, etc)
  • Scholarly articles (e.g. myth, origins of fantasy, classic SFF novels)
  • Writing Advice articles (these articles will obviously only be accepted from appropriate contributors)
  • Anything else (if it’s fantasy related and you think it’ll be interesting to our readers. Shoot an idea our way!)

We ask our staff to submit at least once a month – whether a review or article, just because it keeps your name out there and people talking about / recognising you.

What is being a member of staff like?

Well, sometimes you may feel as though you are ‘simply submitting an article’, but it is always more than that. Your writing has become part of what Fantasy-Faction is known for: high quality and widely varied articles and reviews that promote the fantasy genre. Very few other websites allow a reader to explore fantasy in the way ours does. Because we have so many differences of opinions and such a variety of tastes, Fantasy-Faction offers a bit of something for everyone. Hopefully you’ll want to be part of that and I look forward to hearing from you soon :)
