Writers and their Addictions ... AKA ... GIVE ME MY CAFFEINE!

So the "who is writing?" thread got me thinking. Tea.

Not just tea mind you, but that's what triggered the thought as I sit here at 3am with nothing else to do.

Writers and their addictions.

I'm not the type to sit in a cafe writing, I'm not even much of a coffee drinker, but I do love my caffeine. I recently had a wisdom tooth out and was warned off caffeine for a week or two. I stuck to this prescription and when the time came, the first cup was bloody marvelous. I sat down and wrote for 5 hours straight for the first time in months.

So who likes coffee, who drinks tea, and who takes a tipple to set the mind free?

I'm not a writer but I'm a total tea addict. I very much dislike coffee with the exception of Turkish coffee :)

I went off coffee during my pregnancy, mostly because the morning sickness was so appalling, but I don't think that's what made writing difficult during pregnancy. (Baby brain is a genuine thing, and the morning sickness got in the way, and then I was napping A LOT.)

I'm back as an addict now, but it's more a functional thing than any sort of inspiration. I need to have coffee before about 10am or I have a headache by midday. It's a more manageable addiction than some.

I have found in the past that having something on hand to drink makes writing go quicker, purely because it sets a time-limit on the pause-for-thought - I stop typing, I reach out, I pick up the thing, I sip, I put down, I resume typing. For a while I used to accompany my evening writing sessions with a glass or two of watered wine (because tipsiness makes for writing that feels easy and is revealed as a mess in the morning).

These days, I do my best writing in a cafe, but that's mostly because I'm out of the house (where there's an urge to just do that bit of tidying/vacuuming/whatever else that needs doing) and there's a nice gentle background hubbub.

I'm completely addicted to tea, drinking different types at different times of the day.

Alcohol. I don't write that often, but when I do it's after a couple of beers. I settle down physically, get calm and my mind is free of real life stuff and I can focus better. Without Alcohol, I tend to re-write the same segments as I rarely get satisfaction with the way I had written it before.

I never touch tea, coffee or alcohol. When I write, it's in cold room with no food or drink, except maybe some water. I get distracted enough without anything else getting in the way.

ALAS that I cannot drink black tea. It gives me a stomach ache. But I do love me some rooibos.
