Title: What do you call a group of dragons?
Post by: NedMarcus on November 29, 2018, 07:15:56 AM
My new novel will have dragons, but I'm not sure on the collective term or terms. I've searched and found some ideas: thunder, wing, flight, and weyr (not sure where this one comes from) but am still looking.

Did Robin Hobb call the young dragons living in the sea a tangle? I don't remember, but it might be a good name for immature dragons.

Any other ideas?

Weyr probably comes from the DragonRiders of Pern series by Anne McCaffrey.

I'd go with a flight or a flock. Incidentally, The Flight of Dragons is such a great animated film.

I like flight, but flock makes me think of feathers or sheep :)

How about a doom of dragons?

Actually, doom is quite good. But at the moment, I'm leaning towards a tangle of dragons (thanks Robin) for the immature young, a flight for adults, and a thunder of dragons for the top ones.

I don't think anything's going to be better than Cameron's doom of dragons, but you might consider a clutch, a flight, a storm, or even a gasp - it's what you do when you see a group of dragons, particularly when you don't expect them hahahaha

I like flute. I may be alone, but it sounds like flight, is musical, and feels streamlined and swift.

I quite like storm. That captures the feeling one may feel at seeing a group of them coming at once. I'm not sure if Naomi Novik used anything new in her Temeraire books, but she often wrote about groups of them, as did Jon Hollins in his Dragon Lords trilogy. Novik probably got around it by using military terms, as most of her dragons were used for that purpose.

Flight was my first thought too, but I have to admit doom is good as well.

My first instinct was an "oh shit" of dragons, but I can see how that might not be the angle you were after... :D

How about a “fright of dragons”?  8)

But really, I love “doom” and “storm”.

:) not exactly. I was thinking more about what the dragons would call themselves.

Interesting. What would they call themselves?
A “claw” of dragons
A “horde” of dragons  ;D
A group of dragons? “Too many”

Wouldn't a bunch of badass dragons think of themselves a posse, or a crew?

See, in that light, it really ties into how dragons socialise. Are they highly social and come together in big groups, like sheep or birds or fish in a flock or school? Or do they stick to small nuclear-family groupings? Or is that just for raising young, and once you're, say, an unpaired adult, you effectively go around in, like, a gang and fight other gangs? Are they organised like lions (multiple females together, but lone or attached males)?

I suppose the question is: what is the purpose of your group of dragons? That might help suggest appropriate names.

I've been thinking along these lines and plan to use names to signify a dragon's role or position in society. A thunder of dragons for the most skill warriors, and a wisdom of dragons for the wisest. Some other names, too.

I've written about Dragons and I think this is also pondered in the Eragon books.
I like Thunder (the sound of their collective wings) or Cloud of dragons.. Sounds good, doesn't refer to any other animal and seem impressive.

For some reason the first word that came to me was 'armada'.

In medieval times in my country, a unit of cavalery was called a "banner". They would carry around one flag on a long pole to show the sign of their clan etc.

I guess dragons could do something similiar. In example having a long stripe of cloth carried on a back by one of them. So I guess a "sash" or a "ribbon" could work there.
