Cultures in fantasy are many and varied, but many fall into similar categories.  So, which are your favorites?  Do you you prefer the bloodthirsty martial races, or the peaceful, philosophical ones?  Or maybe ones that fall in between?  I've always liked warrior monks, myself. What about you?

I do love the martial races. I think this comes from my early love of Bushido and the Samurai culture in Japan. I love the idea of ultra disciplined people who embody the warrior spirit.

Some examples I hear you cry?

I liked the Mantis' from Shadows of the Apt.

I'd have liked the Aiel from WoT if they'd been less of a characature.

I did enjoy the Adem from Wise Man's Fear, though their section did draaaaag.

It's been years since I read it so can't remember the name but the 'enemy' in the Riftwar saga.

Loads more that I can't think of at this time of the morning!  :o

You're the first person I know that has read Shadows of the Apt.  :o Reading it on and off right now, actually. I'll have to say the same, btw. Love samurai culture, and I've read more manga than I have comic books.  :P

I like "the barbarians," you know, the smelly, scruffy, war-hammer-wielding children of nature.
I also like the cultures modeled after African/Caribbean/Native-American tribes.

Most make-believe cultures that are sophisticated, have fancy architecture, and fat kings I tend to find a little tedious.

Also a fan of Samurai-esque stuff here! If not in books as I've not read many, but at least when it comes to Akira Kurosawa's movies.

I loved the first 4 books, thought the Scarab Path was duuuuull, then liked Sea Watch after that. Really unique concept I thought.

Nah, I've read it too - enjoyed it very much.

Frankly, I like almost any culture, as long as the writer has thought through all the implications (if they don't and there's a glaring ...er...without X, wouldn't you get Y? I may well put the book down never to return. Luckily it's rare). I have a soft spot for the Viking style cultures though.

As I said in another thread, my comfort zone (for writing) is a cross between classical Greece and Renaissance Europe, but without gunpowder, so I suppose that would make it turbulent, dynamic and with a blend of violence and intellect.  I tend to like societies where people are asking why and trying out new things.  Really, though, I enjoy any well-written and well-thought-out culture.

Least favourite would have to be the kind of society that's the way it is "just because" without it making any real cultural sense (eg knights without a manorial system).

To be perfectly honest, I tend to prefer the cultures that go against the norms of the dominant culture in their given world.  Though to be more specific, I have a liking for nomadic piratical cultures.     Though overall I tend to focus more on having a culture be realistic to the world they live in, rather than just having any general culture because I like it.

I'm totally loving writing with inspiration from medieval Spain/Hispanic cultures, as well as France. Lots of fun!
32,000 words into my novel. Goal is 120,000!

I don't actually have a preference - it's all in the execution for me

Unless there are pirates and Vikings, in which case I tend to drown in my own drool :D

They'd be the Kelewan, and were very obviously based on the Japanese samurai. Fairly ground breaking for a fantasy epic at the time.

I do remember one of my least favorite types of cultures.   I have an utter distaste for cultures that are transparently just cut and pasted from Earth's history.

I like cultures with a Native American influence. Roaming peoples with a close relationship to the world they live in.

I'm quite fond of ancient Middle-Eastern styled cultures.

They're becoming more prevalent, which is great for me, because I also enjoy reading about them.
