To name or not to name like a pornstar...
« on: April 06, 2018, 12:03:19 AM »

So I can't do a poll, so I'll just ask for qualified opinions.
Bradley Darewood sounds a bit like a pornstar's name.  Should I keep it, or change it?
If I change it, I could make a subtle change like "Bradley Darewyd" or try to go full on writerly like "Lance Wryter"

I advise you that your name is more Cornish-sounding than pornish-sounding.

Strikes me as being a bit like the parent's dilemma of trying to name your child something other children won't make fun of, but the fact is that children are gits and can and will make fun of any name. :)

In short: it's all up to you, dude. The nice benefit to a pseudonym is that you know you'll never slip up and autograph something with your official signature, because it's a different name!

Aweeeee @cupiscent the thought that I could ever be good enough that someone would want me to sign something is so sweet!!!

So Darewood is better than Bigwood? Jk. My fav name here is @Lady Ty but Bradley Ty doesn't sound right and she hasn't agreed to my name marriage proposal

Of course I agree to a name marriage. I am actually Cecilia Tyburn Thames. That would make you Bradley Tyburn Thames. but as you are a Lord your correct signature is simply ‘Tyburn Thames’. That would be a good author name, but Ben AA might be a little upset. Not to mention Father Thames.

Your real name never sounded pornstar to me, quite the opposite.

It conjures up rugged young hero of a Victorian adventure story, who is of humble origin but desperately in love with Ermyntrude, the mill-owners daughter, whose father forbids their raging passion, so Bradley goes away with a broken heart, explores dark dangerous jungles and lonely endless desert, escapes pirates and also bandits, while wrestling giant spiders, then unexpectedly finds fabulous treasure, and returns in disguise to rescue Ermyntrude, the rich man’s daughter after all, and is only just in time  to stop her wedding to her father’s evil old rival, who wants to own all the mills in town and has bankrupted her father forcing Ermy to sacrifice herself to a fate worse than death to give comfort and a home to her miserable old father in his dotage.

The title will be

Bold Brave Bradley Darewood says No

I am now exhausted with ghost writing your first novel. Change all the characters to fantasy folk and you will make a fortune. Everyone here please witness I was his inspiration and will deserve 10%

Bradley Darewyd sounds cool too but I'm used to the rascaly sounding, swashbuckling and hearts-stealing Darewood.

Dadly Barewood you mean.  ;D

I never thought your name looked bad, to be honest (unlike some of the options above ;D)

King Bradley? Sure, except for the image 8)

Listen, there is a published SFF author called Konar, and it sounds the same as the very strong french insult, "connard". I can never escape an inward chuckle. However I'm not immature enough to shun his work because his name sounds like a french insult.

You're called Darewood - not whorson or festaring or dicksir or morninwood. At worst your name evokes a crazy scary wood to me, where kids would dare each other to enter. the dare-wood.
Take a pseudonym by all means, but if you don't have good reasons, I find this motivation odd.

I will not write under my true name, because it's foreign and I also strongly dislike the family who gave me my last name. I would not gratify them by being published under it, if it ever happened to me, that is!
Plus, as a woman, we have the sad option of publishing under initials to fool the still widely spread idiots who won't read anything written by a woman.

I don't think you have anything to fear for your name.

I just think Bradley isn’t such a great name.  :P
“Brad”, maybe.
It works for Mr. Pitt.

But maybe something a little more... hmmm... classy?
Forrest Darewood
James Darewood
Mason Darewood (on second thought)
Fell Darewood (that’ll confuse the gender Nazis)
Big Darewood (oh, darn, that’s the porn thing, isn’t it?)
Flynn Darewood.

Yeah, that’s the one. Flynn Darewood.
Or, Flint Darewood.

Or

If you're choosing a pen name, I'd forget anything but a spelling mistake that is close to a famous author. That way all the bad spellers will find your books. As a special bonus, you won't have to edit your books either, because your readers won't notice any mistakes. Here are a few you could try.

JRR Tolken
JRR Tolkein
