Google isn't my best friend all the time:(
« on: June 22, 2015, 11:26:04 PM »
Hello FF community!
The title is vague, but eye-catching.
Ever since I decided I wanted a career as a writer-not just author. I want to write awesome fantasy adventures, captivating sci-fi, and maybe slice-of-life stories & coming-to-age stories.
But sometimes I can't keep writing.
I realized this has to be deal with my lack of knowledge.
I'd like to know, where do you nerds find the best information?
Like economy, learning how money works.
Or
How did people live before technology?
Maybe
How did they solve math problems?
I can go on with a thousand examples, hopefully you guys will understand what I'm getting at.

You know your best source of information for writing novels?

People watching

Books are about people. So that's what you need to study. Who they are, what they want, how they express that (or don't). Motivations, quirks, tics, foibles, mannerisms. Really look at people

Other than that, you may need to be a little more specific in the type of info you are after. I mean I could link you to several say Vijing places, or ones that deal with horses and how to to treat them in your novel or....

But that may not be info you are after.
My tongue has been in my cheek for so long, I've eroded a new mouth.

Duellists Trilogy (as Julia Knight) coming soon from Orbit!

I couldn't think of examples to use! Now I got one!
Thanks for the help.

I always start with Wikipedia. The Youtube. Then googling around and try to hit paydirt. If that doesn't work, I know I could post something here at F-F and see who knows what.

Yes, I agree, it all starts with people; but it is nice to find some of the factbase for our other-world/other-time concepts. But we can take it too and spend all our tine world-building instead of story writing.

This may be old fashioned...but it might be helpful to make friends with a librarian. One of my best friends is going to school for a masters in library science. He always helps me find primary documents (there are websites with them posed up which are public domain) and other resources related to the period I am researching. I also have to say, he is pretty good with citations too, so he can proof read those for me.

Maybe it wouldn't be convenient to try to be bff with a librarian (I've known my friend since he was a freshmen studying history and education), but you can at least go to your local library and introduce yourself. I am certain they would be glad to help you out.

QFT, librarians are an amazing source of information finding. It's an invaluable relationship for a writer to have.
