Milestones
« on: June 01, 2016, 05:23:46 AM »
Does anyone else get a little thrill when they hit a milestone in writing? Like hitting a specific amount of words? I know there's a long way to go, but seeing that amount of words can just give you a bit of a boost. I just hit 50,000 words on my current WiP and it made me feel good doing it.

Oh yeah, for sure! I love that feeling.

Congrats btw! 50K words is a great marker. What is your target? 100K?

Thanks. I don't actually have a target. The book takes as many words as I need to tell it in. My previous novels have all come in at between 80 and 100K, but this one is a little more involved than those, so it may crack the 100K mark.

Congrats, brother.

And I can assure readers that the WIP is a hoot.

Congrats! 50k is a really nice mark, and I got really happy when I finished NaNo last year.

Woah. Are you an author? Which books have you written? What pen name, when, how, why?  ::)

Congrats, Elfy! Is it part of Realmspace or something new?

It is pretty neat, and encouraging as well as daunting sometimes. I've stumbled around the 25-30k mark before, but on my most recent one managed to push through and around the 60k mark and I thought oh shit I've written 60,000 words and I'm nowhere near done. I thought it would be a relatively slim story. :P

The one I'm doing now is though, I think, I hope. *channels inner Sanderson by accident*

Hi, @Lanko. Elfy has written several Realspace novels, unpublished to my knowledge. I've read the first two and really enjoyed them.

I do a similar thing, except I think of it more as storing my own shit in a pile, and I only have one first draft completed. :P

Thanks, Xi. It's something completely different. I did 4 Realmspace novels and one UF called The Foxwood Chronicles and then a random thought triggered something and out came this one. It's tentatively titled Elfblood, but that's really just a working title at present. Not sure exactly what subgenera box I'd put Elfblood into, probably fits best into alternate history, although it features elves, dwarves, goblins, etc..., just in a post WWII setting.

Twenty-Elf Century?

Sounds interesting!  :D

Kind of, Mr J. Thanks. It's something very different for me, so I hope it works out.
I will expand your TBR pile.

Bravo Elfy!

I wish I was being that productive! I have about 10k down by now but 4 of them are in snippets and small floating paragraphs, and the rest is split in raw chapters. Not impressive given I've been at it a whole year. Monthly contests distract me. :P

But I think milestones are a great idea to motivate oneself and you should definitely treat yourself upon reaching that one! Keep up the great work!

That's awesome, Elfy! Glad to hear you're being productive, compared to the lot of us! ;)

Only big project I'm working on right now is a short story that refuses to cooperate. Not even going to look at my 140K first draft, with only a 1/4 I feel is up to par with rewrites.
