My alternative fantasy game to D&D is Barbarians of Lemuria.

Was there a free PDF version of that? I've heard of it, it's one of the popular titles amongst the OSR crowd, pretty sure I've taken a quick scan of it too. Has a good flavourful magic system that suits the S&S setting if I remember rightly.

I also like Heroes & Other Worlds, or HOW which is a retro clone of Steve Jackson's The Fantasy Trip/Advanced Melee/Wizard. I especially like the dark ages setting Redwald. Mainly cos I wrote it.  ;D

The first or second edition is a free pdf, but I think the more recent ones are worth the very small price.

TSR's Marvel Super Heroes (aka FASERIP) was my second favorite RPG. I played it a lot in junior high, and it is the system that birthed most of the heroes in my own universe.

Has anyone tried the Dresden Files RPG?  It's based on FATE and always looks like it would be a blast.
