D&D: 4.0 vs Essentials
« on: April 10, 2011, 08:47:28 PM »
We're still playing "normal" 4.0, but it looks like Wizards is only supporting Essentials for now on. Has anyone tried this line of stuff? How is it? How's it compare?

As far as I know, Essentials is just the streamlined version of 4.0, with some changed errata and a couple new classes, powers, etc...

I hadn't even heard of Essentials till I checked this thread. I'll ask my D&D group when we meet this Saturday, since some of them are better at keeping up with the new stuff than I am.

It is kind of streamlined, but also seems quite a bit different. Almost like someone tried to re-create D&D (ye olde red box version) with 4.0 tools. Very strange.

See now that sounds interesting.  I shall have to ask my gaming group if any of them have seen it yet.

I've been playing 4.0 since it came out, and we are currently still playing but we stared to incorporate some of the Essentials stuff.  It really isn't that off kilter with anything, so the two can be combined in house if you want to keep going without any problems.
If any are interested in a small sample of my writing...

The Essentials stuff is quite nice. It really is a cut-down version of the main rulebook in the sense that not all the options are there--they were trying to make something that was easier to get into, I think.

But given all of that, they're working on D&D next edition, which I think will be called 5.0.
