Unheard of Authors Making Outrageous Money

so.  i made a tool-widget-bookmarklet thing:
http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/writers-corner/avoiding-writing-or-how-many-words-didn't-you-write-today/msg124302/#msg124302

totally insane because i should be writing.  instead, i have been poking around at all these crazy authors and books.  looking at comparing traditional publishing and self-publishing on the kindle.

you know, comparing the 15% for authors or the 70% for authors thing.

for example, one of our faves:

Name of the Wind:  http://www.amazon.com/Name-Wind-Kingkiller-Chronicle-Day-ebook/dp/B0010SKUYM/
Sales Rank: 860
Units per day: 117
Price per Unit: $8.99
Sales per day at 15%: $157.77
Sales per day at 70%: $736.28

and the mighty, unknown self-published author with two books out:

Nightblade: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B013D0H2GS
Sales Rank: 299
Units per day: 335
Price per Unit: $3.99
Sales per day at 15%: $200.50
Sales per day at 70%: $935.65

i'm sorry, what?

<triple checks math>

yup.  yup, that's right.

p.s.  please note these are all estimates based on sales rank voodoo calculations i've dug up from one of those guys who study these sorts of things!  this guy: http://kindlepreneur.com/amazon-kdp-sales-rank-calculator/

The Sword and the Dragon by M. R. Mathias:
http://www.amazon.com/Sword-Dragon-Wardstone-Trilogy-Book-ebook/dp/B003X9775Q/
Sales Rank: 9893
Units per day: 15
Price per Unit: $0.99
Sales per day at 15%: $2.23
Sales per day at 70%: $10.39

How do you get info about the sales (units per day)?

Edit: ignore, just saw your PS thing. Not really sure that one works, wouldn't it be distorted due to the time since release?

he talks a bit about the algorithm in the page comments.  obviously, it's just an estimate.  obviously, it's going to be off.  however, obviously, it's going to be off in a consistent fashion, so it should be just fine to use in order to apply context equally to various books.  especially on the upper-end of the scale as the data won't be as noisy.

aka, noting that nightblade makes 6x the money of name of the wind should be mostly accurate-ish.

tho, i'm sure the kindle unlimited plays into it somehow too.  at the very least, comparing unlimited-to-unlimited should be just fine.

I don't think it's that surprising. The Nightblade author is selling almost three times as many copies a day, and he doesn't have to pay as much to the publisher. If you're willing to take the risk yourself, publishing houses are making less and less sense. Especially when you start looking into what publishers do for you, and instead get back a list of all the things they aren't willing to do for you.

Does it make a difference that NOTW was published in 2007 and this Nightblade 4 months ago? Even a very small readerbase would make this difference, considering it's a pretty new book.

We have to consider NOTW is still selling, at the very least, this amount of volumes daily for almost 9 years! Will this Nightblade be able to do the same?

But gotta admit this guy has speed. Nightblade in August and the sequel released last month.

Would be very interesting to find a self-publish around the same period of NOTW and compare. Or the entire amount of sales and compare values.

Slow and steady wins the race.

I'm more surprised that Rothfuss is still making so much from his long tail even now than the other guy's sales!  :P

This... makes me really sad. Looking at the near-flatline that is my KDP sales list.
I'll notify your next of kin... that you sucked!
