I just came across this article, which I found both well-written and detailed. For anyone who has a book in hand and is looking for ways to sell, here is a guide to one aspect of self-marketing. I've archived it for the day when I do this for my own book.

Sounds like he has been pretty successful at this. I have to say, having done a few art fairs myself, that I don't have the patience for them. Sitting at a booth all day and interacting with people is not something I am good at. Which is probably why I never sell anything. You have to be very outgoing, friendly, encouraging.

A few thoughts - books sold by hand aren't tracked anywhere. So you might be putting money in your pocket, but you aren't bumping sales numbers or garnering reviews. Both of which could affect marketing.

He's putting a lot of money into this. Purchasing a pile of books, printing, booth fees. Seems like he is more than covering it, but be prepared not to your first time out. If you pick the wrong venue or the weather's bad or you aren't as good at selling as you'd hoped, you could go home without making back even the table fee.

I wish the person who made the post would have quantified how much sales was "making a killing" - if his entry fee was $35 and he made $35 maybe that's a killing to him, but for hours and hours of sitting there, it's a poor return on one's time. 

In general you can reach more people online then you can face-to-face.  And it can be very tiring to spend a whole day "pushing your wares" behind a table. But heck, in the early days you try anything to get some traction.
