Publishing to Amazon/Smashwords
« on: November 15, 2013, 09:34:41 AM »
Hi all

Been reading through the various threads on here about Amazon and Smashwords. I have a book for sale through a very small independent website called Undiscovered Writers. I've got about 60 sales of my horror book there and reviews have been extremely positive from everyone who has read it (and not all of them are my mum!!) so I want to expand the areas it is available to buy from.

My question is this: I have read the style guides for both Amazon and Smashwords and am confused about the whole paragraph/tab thing - do I really have to go through my manuscript and delete every tab? Also, I have tried to create a table of contents, but all it did was give a page number to every single paragraph in my book - I have no idea how to correct this!

Any help or advice as to how to sort my manuscript out (preferably quickly and for free) would be gratefully received.

Yes, you really have to go through and delete every tab. If you don't, your digital copy will look wonky, resulting in customers returning it for a refunds.

I haven't run into this before. If you can delete what you've done, I suggest you do it. Then go back to the free Smashwords Guide and follow their step-by-step instructions. Even if you don't go with Smashwords, following it will help prepare your manuscript for Amazon and other places.

Thanks very much for this. Guess I know what I'm doing for the rest of the week!

You can delete all the tabs very easily in Word (or most other word processors) by doing a search/replace. Search for ^t and replace it with nothing. Do a couple tests, then click "replace all" and you're done.
