Has anyone done or thought about doing a Kickstarter.

I'm thinking about doing one for my novel Black Redneck vs. Space Zombies and wanted to get feedback on what rewards would get you to contribute to a publishing kickstarter.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks,

I know that Ben Galley did a successful one. And Michael Sullivan did one as well. Who else? Dang. I can't remember the other person on here that recently did one. It'll come to me. :)

There's some interesting number crunching here, showing you what to expect (and what not to):

A.E. Marling did very well with his Kickstarter campaign for his book "Gravity's Revenge."  His goal was $2,950 and he reached $4,428 by the time it was done. He had several tiers of participation/rewards. I thought he did a fantastic job of setting up his campaign page and promoting it. You might get some ideas from what he did. Here's a link:

Thanks for all the info.

I actually read the article by Matt Forbeck and it was a great help.

Here's the link to mine if you want to take a look and give any suggestions.

I ran a Kickstarter for my Hollow World novel.  I really didn't expect the results I received.  I figured I needed $6,000 and as I was afraid I wouldn't raise that much I optted for $3,000 figuring I would fund half and be happy if the Kickstarter raised half.

It ended up funding at over 1000% (earning more than $31,000 - including people who contributed via PayPal).  I'm going to write up my results and some tips in the future.

In the meantime....here are a few resources worth looking at:

Michael,

Thanks for the resources.

Between here and r/fantasy I've noticed you do a lot to help other writers. I think it was just yesterday you offered to read a few pages for a writer that was unsure of his work. Not many people do that so just wanted to say thanks on behalf of newer writers.

And, thanks for this specific case. I'm going to go track down those resources right now.

Well I try to help out in any way I can. I know first-hand how difficult it is to navigate this whole "publishing thing."

I've hadn't thought about kickstarter before, but seeing a post in the Small Press & Self Pub section made me wonder if it would be a way to raise money for the all-important cover AND effectively get pre-order sales that might generate reviews and buzz.  We're only talking a few hundred quid for covers here, probably, and most of the thread previously is on about tens of thousands!

Does anyone have experience with small-budget Kickstarters and maybe some idea what else I could put the money towards if I reach the cover goal? I'd have two books so would like two covers, and then was thinking maybe pro editing or a print run?

I'm only just beginning to think about this, because I never reckoned on having the money up front until now.
