I've been looking at ways to get my book noticed for a while now for a while now. It's one of the main topics I see on various forum boards from fellow Indies.

It's all a marathon and not a sprint. Going into this with low expectations treated as a long learning experience has been great. Book Two is where everything starts to synergize anyway.

That said, figured I may as well get some groundwork down.

The biggest mistake with self promo is people tend to go overboard. Stop it! We're not going to have hollywood budgets and it'll look like a Ghanian action film. I wanted to try something way more subtle. Something that could sit at the top of a review and draw the eye.

The animator isn't quite finished yet and I need to nail the quality as this is the first GIF I've ever made, but this is the WiP.

I'll be seeing if the strategy pays off and giving an update down the line along with other things in the pipeline. For now I wanted to share something cool and hopefully inspire people to think differently about their strats for marketing their work.

Love your feedback and thoughts!

Hey, Matt.
I think the effect is really, really cool. Just enough and not too much at all.
Yeah, animated covers could get over the top easily. Yours is spot on.

I agree, I like the subtle animations in this image. Very cool.

Very cool.

Will the effect carry over to the miniature covers when I'm browsing on Amazon?  Because that would *definitely* catch my eye out of a list of similar books.

I assume you mean ebooks - otherwise we're on Harry Potter realm :D
(I'd love my paper books to do that, though, hehe)

It won't, it's purely for promo purposes. Would be nice though!

Darn.  I was hoping that you could submit the different sized thumbnails to amazon, rather than having them automatically generated.  Ah.  Now I see the amazon covers are .jpg not .gif.  Alas.

How are you going to disseminate it?

That is bloody brilliant. I think that's an excellent way to get some extra attention, and the effect is subtle but effective.

What does the finished product look like? Has the .gif helped it to get more attention? The WIP looks nice. I've never thought about putting an animated effect on a cover like that...very clever!
