I'm surprised that she hasn't come up sooner in this thread. In the same vein of Kristin Cashore and Robin Hobb, I would mention Tamora Pierce.

Further list:

Tamora Pierce (Song of the Lioness Quartet, Wild Magic Series, Circle of Magic Series)

Cinda Williams Chima (Seven Realms/Grey Wolf Throne Novels)

Naomi Lane (Sevallian Chronicles)

Jim Butcher (Codex Alera Series)
Not all those who wander are lost.

I second Isobelle Carmody's Obernewtyn series. Definitely YA, definitely epic. Though I'm biased - Isobelle Carmody came to speak at my school when I was a wee lass, she was fantastically cool.

I'm a writer of YA Epic Fantasy. And I'm trying to find novels similiar to mine. Problems is, I'm not having much  luck. Sure, there's lot of adult epics, but very little YA.
Graceling, Fire, etc by Kristin Cashore
The Ranger Apprentice series
Shannon Hale books
Anybody have any others? Especially the new stuff.

You should defintely read the Monster Blood Tattoo series by DM Cornish-- YA at its finest. I think the series is called The Foundling's Tale in America, though.
32,000 words into my novel. Goal is 120,000!

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Fablehaven series by Brandon Mull.  Talk about epic!  5 thick books of adventure, magic, mythology and more with about every type of fantasy creature there is and a few new ones.

Here's a link to the book on Brandon's site:

Great stuff!  I highly recommend it (in case you couldn't tell).

Great suggestions in this thread. I've found a few new series to add to my to read list :) I second Brandon Mull's Mythhaven and also recommend:

Janice Hardy: The Healing Wars Trilogy (The Shifter, Blue Fire & Darkfall)

Rae Carson: The Girl of Fire and Thorns (first book of a trilogy, the second book is coming out this fall if it's not already)

David Eddings: Belgarion series (Pawn of Prophecy, Queen of Sorcery, Magician's Gambit, Castle of Wizardry & Enchanters' End Game) + a sequel series + two huge stand-alone books

the categories are mutually exclusive by book length, though obviously there can be exceptions.  would harry potter suffice?

What was it about Throne of Glass that you really enjoyed? That's been on my to buy list for a while but for some reason everytime I've gone to buy it I've always ended up getting something else instead!

Thanks! The first line of a book can be enough to make me want to read more or consider not bothering so I like to add that into my reviews.
