Title: RPG: Rules, Questions, & Discussion
Post by: Charlemagne on July 27, 2014, 09:54:49 PM
RULES:

1) Have fun. This is the big one. If you're not having fun, or you are disrupting the fun that someone else is having, then you're doing it wrong. The key is to relax - this will get crazy - and just enjoy it.

2) The story gets moved along by posts. This means that if Person 1 posts something, and it involves Person 2's character, that actually happens to that character. If I say that Chill is making squirrel dumplings with me while there's a huge naval battle going on (yes, this was a thing that happened), then Chill is making squirrel dumplings with me. This is especially helpful when someone doesn't post for a few days - their character can stay in the story through other people's posts.

3) If you want to make a big change to the story, drop out, join late, or anything that would seriously impact the game, post it here first. We won't stop you - we can just plan around you. And find humorous reasons for why you've done it.

4) Don't be a jerk. This kinda goes without saying, but still. So much of this is about individuals, all it takes is one person going too far and it all goes to hell. This does not mean you can't be funny. Don't worry about being PC. Don't worry if someone will be insulted because you had their character say something silly. That's fine. Hell, I'm pretty sure my character ended up sleeping with transgender amazons in the last RPG. Just don't make it about the player - keep it about the character.

5) Have fun. This is really, really, really the most important thing. If we break every other rule (and we probably will), this is the one that has to stay in place. Yes, this rule is mandatory.

This is a very low-key game. We're pretty relaxed. Just have some goddamn fun.

There was a lot more evil involved: we had evil tanks, evil soldiers, and most importantly, "Evil Al" Yankovic, but yes. The principle is the same.

A *very* basic question: what do you do?
Is this writing a story by pieces?

A *very* basic question: what do you do?
Is this writing a story by pieces?

Yes, but with interaction.

Here is an example from the last RPG:

Quote from: Hound
Suddenly the doors flew open, and the Hound strode in dragging a figure tied up in a sack behind him.  Deftly the Hound cut the sack free revealing a disheveled figure.  "Right, world's greatest writer since Tolkien, here is a willing audiences who want to spend the night being regaled with stories of your fantastical magical kingdom."
"Really" the figure smiled "Right folks, here begins a 70k word adventure!"
"Enjoy" the Hound chuckles, "And by the way pirates, over in the other tavern Mark Lawrence is sitting in the corner reading extracts from King of Thorns, also I'm not Scottish, so I pay a hell of a lot better".

With that the Hound marched out, chuckling to himself.

Quote from: Lor
Lor got to her feet, albeit a little unsteadily, and slammed her tankard onto the wood, watching it topple and roll off. Then she looked around the room, spotting some guardsmen loitering near the bar.

"You! You need to arrest this" she nudged the figure on the floor with her toe. "For crimes against being a decent human being." She moved off towards the door, fists clenched. "I've got a pirate to deal with."

A *very* basic question: what do you do?
Is this writing a story by pieces?

Thank you, ScarletBea, for reminding me that I need to make a...

SECONDARY RULES POST

While the first post dictates the behavior of the players, hopefully this post will make it a little clearer how this is actually supposed to work. Every participant in the game makes a character. This isn't like D&D, you don't roll for skill points or anything boring. All you do is decide on a personality, how you want your character to act, and everything else naturally follows. This can be done entirely on personal experience, or you can make someone completely up. For example, C.Hill's character is a Texan gunslinger (I assume this is 100% autobiographical), whereas mine is an evil Dark Lord (likewise).

The game is run by posting. Right now the story is taking place in the "recruitment" threads, when we get moving we'll probably post others. "Arry throughout the pond that leads to the isle of the naturalists" was one from the last RPG, "Errol's Betrayal" was another. Players will post from the perspective of their own character, as Xia so helpfully pointed out in the examples above - Lor's posts were from Lor's POV, Gariath's from his character's POV. Again, one poster can influence the actions taken by other characters.

Most of the deeper gameplay should hopefully become obvious as we start moving forward. Hope that clears up any questions on gameplay, please post here/PM me or C.Hill with any more!

I seem to have made you an irritable Britishman, Elfy. Sorry.

But yes. Fluff is essential to this process.

I think this sounds fab, but:

disclaimer: I'm not a writer, nor want to be one. Please excuse my silly basic bits of story

And eeeek! I've just realised I posted on the wrong thread, I didn't want to help the evil Lord, I wanted to be on the hero's side! That will just teach me not to post when I'm supposed to be in work meetings...
Can I change? Pretty please?
(no one seems to have posted after me, so I'll delete there... *sneaks out*)

Double posting. Yeah.

So, I was going to ask what the "S" in RPGS Ringleader meant, but seems that mistake has been fixed. I guess me and Charlie are now Ringleaders. Time to break out the bears and seals.

Oh, and guys, I think Zael's coming for this one. Up Helly Aah!

Well, Idlewinder has jumped in as a hissing cat, Gariath is a chicken that's not a chicken, and Arry's. . . a bystander, I guess. Xi's watching, and Lor and Lionwalker are off gallivanting around. The usual?

I love the number of non-humans in this thing. Elfy is a pixie, Zael has his merhound, Idlewilder is... something hissing, and Gariath is a chimera(?)-possessed chicken. This seems like it should be good. ;D

I tried looking at the older threads to find the name of my mer-hound, but I couldn't find it. I think it was Jasper... but I'm not sure. And I agree, Charlie. Definitely a strange mix of beast and man this time round :)

Anyway, what have I missed? Is there any specific goal we're working towards this time or are we gonna wing it and see what happens? (The latter is the best, in my opinion... let the glorious ludicrousness commence!)

We're definitely winging it. The basic premise is that a hero called up Doc to fight a Dark Lord (Charlie). Evidently Doc's the unknown hero now.

And I think I'm going to give it till August 1. I don't know what GMT that'll be. Probably ease into it rather than set forth.

Hmm. Fair enough.
That means the recruitment phase will be a lot shorter than last time... I'm cool with that if we have enough folks.

Hmm. Is that too soon. It's been up for . . . oh, it's only been 4 days, and the first two don't really count. Maybe give it till this Saturday? Help stir up the creative juices. :)
Title: Re: RPG: Rules, Questions, & Discussion

Aye.
Having said that, I guess it's up to the two skippers... er.. I mean Ringleaders, to decide when is suitable.
We both have quite large posse's now, may dilute the intimacy/fun of the overall thing if too many people get involved.
As terrible as that is to say, the more the merrier is something I usually agree with. But maybe that's why we got in trouble for being too clique the first time round?
I dunno, Skip. A deadline sounds reasonable enough.
Title: Re: RPG: Rules, Questions, & Discussion
Post by: Charlemagne on July 30, 2014, 10:24:00 PM
I think sooner is better than later in terms of getting moving. Zael's right about our group getting pretty sizable (I think we probably have enough people to make this a real campaign), and I'd worry about interest and initiative stagnating if we continue to just wait here.

Other than that, it's up to C. Hill. :)
Title: Re: RPG: Rules, Questions, & Discussion
Post by: Doctor_Chill on July 30, 2014, 10:32:37 PM
Ugh. Power. I don't like it. ;)

But yeah, I think it would be a good idea to get the ball rolling. How about 9 PM GMT for August 1? Gives people tomorrow to wrap things in order and for anybody new to jump in if they want. But I do like the current party as it stands.

Any objections? Can we all meet around that time for a good push? And any suggestions?

Well, this thread is technically here to let people know what you have planned, so if you wanted to you could give us a brief of what your character can and can't do (if you've thought that far ahead) - but for the most part we just wing it, allowing each other to... I wanna say manipulate but that seems rather harsh ;)... use one another's characters to further their own character's story/the story as a whole.

But yeah, just jump in to whoever's crew you want.
For reference - Chill's group seems to be on the side of light and good.
Whereas Charlemagne's group fight's for gold and... well... gold.

I don't need his approval! Darkness and evil shall rule over all, for we exist even in the hearts of the best men and... *monologues for days*

Digging this entrance though. Classy.

And yeah, the bank account accumulates interest, which means everyone who got in on the ground level now has essentially INFINITE SHOPPING POWER! Bwahahahaaaa

Hey all, this is great :D
I must apologise for today/tomorrow: usually I read/post around this hour before starting working, then lunch break, then when I get home in the evening, but I'm in day-long meetings with a very short break, and then going out to dinner with the foreign team, so it's been/will be limited posting days.

Feel free to use Scarlet - I like what Zael's doing, but don't dismiss her too much, the soft-soft is only a facade and she'll come back with a vengeance ;D

I really like that we don't know who the real hero is. Heck, we might meet the "real" one along the way if this keeps up. ;)

And don't worry Bea. Life happens. And I never saw Scarlet as soft, more as the "You cross over a line and I'll smash your head in with one of my books."

Welcome, players! Your first bit of good luck has fallen into place. A new home has been created, so you can now find your RPG threads in the Writer's Corner: http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/rpg-fantasy-faction-style/

Once the game commences, you may see me again. You never know when a bit of luck may fall your way and change the tides. But be forewarned. Not all luck is good, and there is another player in the mix you have yet to meet. His interference may not be as fortuitous as mine.

Omen

('Dark Soul' by wyldraven on dev'art)

Quote
An omen is a phenomenon that is believed to foretell the future, often signifying the advent of change. People in the ancient times believed that omens lie with a divine message from their gods.

These omens include natural phenomena, for example an eclipse, abnormal births of animals and humans and behavior of the sacrificial lamb on its way to the slaughter. They had specialists, the diviners, to interpret these omens. They would also use an artificial method, for example, a clay model of a sheep liver, to communicate with their gods in times of crisis. They would expect a binary answer, either yes or no answer, favorable or unfavorable. They did these to predict what would happen in the future and to take action to avoid disaster.

Though the word "omen" is usually devoid of reference to the change's nature, hence being possibly either "good" or "bad," the term is more often used in a foreboding sense, as with the word "ominous".
says wikipedia.
In a magical world, omens have a more dire significance and we think it's a neat topic for short story writing, because if you ask the question 'What could go wrong?' related to omens, diviners, foretelling and gods, the answer is usually: A lot.[/size]

Well, I thought it would be a good push in the beginning with everyone being on at one time, but if that's too much trouble, then a gradual move and cut-off is fine. Whatever works best for y'all. :)

No, that works for me, I wasn't planning on going out. I'll put the alarm in ;D
(unless my parents call, just my luck, and then I might just step out)

But won't that cause a big mess, if everyone is posting at the same time without reading what the others have done before?

And is 9 PM GMT is the morning for you guys? I thought it was in the evening. (It's 4 PM over here for me.)

And thank you mysterious fortune goddess who's not a mod at all. ;)

By GMT I assume you mean "Greenwich Mean Time", which is London time. I'm 3 hours north of London, so that is directly 9pm for me.
Now it's 5.45 pm here, how can it be 4pm for you?

Ah, ok :)
I only know by heart the time difference to Indiana/South Carolina and Memphis, those are the US locations that I work with, hehe, and if 9pm is 4pm for you, then you're in the same time zone as Memphis.

Oooooh we have a brand new special zone!

Shoot. I did my math wrong. I was an hour ahead. Is 10 GMT better or worse?

And this is why Charlie shouldn't give me the reins.

Judging from the locations listed in their profiles, I believe 9 PM GMT translates to 7 AM for Elfy, 3 PM for Ben, 4 PM for Yuan and yourself, 5 PM for me, 10 PM for the UK folks, and 11 PM for Xiagan.   Unless I missed anybody. (I'm assuming UK for those with locations that apply to multiple places given the site).

I personally see no reason why I shouldn't make it.

I'm liking this new fortune goddess thing! Seems interesting...

Pretty much any time works for me, and if it doesn't then no time would work or me and you may as well go ahead and start. I'm like Windy - leaving on vacation on Monday, and though I'll try and keep posting, my interaction will likely be more sporadic. C. Hill will most likely be leading the charge.

Well, for the good side, we don't know who the actual "hero" is. We have an unassuming one and the other takes his calling like a man. That's what makes it fun.

Technically my guy saw it.    Personally I wouldn't mind some craziness, it would help exacerbate his slow realization that he took a wrong turn on his way to the most recent Abercrombie wannabe's story.   If all goes the way I think it will, and it probably will, then I feel sorry for his mental state.

I'm gonna go ahead and let y'all know now, cause I suppose it'd be quite a slow process and if you aren't aware you might miss it.

A descent into darkness sounds awesome. But on the topic of characters, I'm thinking MTM's World Building Fiasco sounds like a good way to create that origin story for Doc. I mean, I have to take advantage of a magical world where the broken land is the Wild West.

And I vote that Charlie rewrites that were-coyote scene in Olde English.

I remember no hippocampus. Nor do I remember lost pistols. I do remember a mother tree (with romantic designs on Treebeard!), and Mars bars. And squirrel dumplings, which are probably my most lasting memory of that "campaign". ;D

Hey! It already took me way too long to write that were-coyote scene. I kept rewriting it because it sounded weird (it still does, imo). If there's a large groundswell of support, I might be convinced, but methinks it unlikely.

This is pretty awesome.  Exactly the sort of RPG I've been wanting to play.  Cole's not quite human, for the record.  A character misappropriated from an older project and weirded up a little.  He can turn into a bear, but he's not a were thing.  Think a chaotic neutral Tom Bombadil.

Doc has amassed a group of misfits/crazies to take the hero to Redrum (Hah, it's murder!) where the Scary Castle and Dark Lord Charlemagne live. It's very hard to catch up if there are "full short stories" in some, I tend to just jump over them...
And I'm not sure people can write "off screen" then try to fit in, lots happens inbetween...

When and if those gifts will come in to play is yet to be seen. Who they choose to tell about them is at their discretion. But the rules that accompany the gifts are as follows:

Any benefits of their gift can only be claimed once. Any attempts to "overuse" a gift will result in dire consequences. Perhaps banishment. That will be decided by another, but I will promise you this, it will not be worth it.

Best wishes and good luck as your story begins...

Much apologies! I felt weirdly ill so I had one of those sachet thingies. Knocked me clean out for 12 hours...
On the bright side, I don't feel ill any more ;D

Curses, Scarlet! Making me seem all dark and brooding! :P
My ulterior motive may not be what you have in mind... ;)

Finished the chapter. It's crap, but that's what rewrites are for. Now if I can just finish these next two this week, then I'll feel like I made progress.

Have a little more faith in your abilities, man! I've read your stuff and it's pretty freakin' awesome :P
But yeah, you know what they say (more or less) - Just write, write, write. Editing is where the magic happens.

I've been working on one chapter for about 4 days now. I'm still only about halfway through, even after adding another 1000 words to it just now :(

What is it you're working on?

I'm right there with you, and doing it again because I'm in on this, and then the writing challenge this month sounds fun.  But that was the whole idea behind the shared world - that I could be constantly working on one project, even if it was one of the thousand tiny moving parts.

Today was an oddly productive day for some reason. Granted I've been up since 12 a.m, but I've managed to write just over a 1000 words for the chapter, and another 600 word story that will appear between this chapter and the next as a sort of cheaty-Pete worldbuilder.

I'm tempted to write a couple more of the short ones while my streak is still hot!

Now I see the Captain nailing Ben's head against the wall like a hammer. :P

Zael, it's the same WIP as I had with the Pirates, it's just this is the second draft. I'm rewriting it all, but the flashbacks are completely revamped. Thus the first draft statement. I'm having problems writing from an innocent, detached perspective so the twist in the next chapters will have a bigger effect.

And then we have the writing competition. . .

Cole will likely remain a bear until the ship is out of danger, though given that it is now full of holes and soaked through, that may be a while.  I, however, must go to work.  I'll try to check in later.  Feel free to have Cole act as a bear-ferry.

I considered upping this insanity to 11 (yes I can do that, don't tempt me) but decided I wanted to have Cole beat the crap out of Godzilla. And I'm not sure how long this ship is going to last us at this rate. ;)

For information, I think Zael and I can carry the ship by magic as far as Castle Black (because it's closest), even if the ship if half destroyed...
We won't have a very happy captain, though.

Just activated my gift. Thank you Fortuna, O Goddess of Magic and Pancakes. If only Mischief didn't like to mess around. Or is that him?

My gift:

A Glimmer Fairy This rare and precious fairy has been contained for thousands of years. If you break the containment device, the fairy will gorge on all magic within a mile radius. No magical abilities or items may be used, as their power has been drained by the feasting fairy. Magic will be restored when the member who unleashed the fairy posts again or 24 hours (when the fairy returns to slumber), whichever comes first. At that time all magic will be fully restored.

And now the two crews will merge at the island of giant urchins. For how long? Who knows? Find out next time on Who Killed the Butler?

I'm pretty sure Scarlet's clean but I'm not entirely sure.

Alright, let's see if I can figure this out.

AHEM.

ONCE UPON A TIME

WHILE DOC'S GROUP WAS FIGHTING GODZILLA, LORD CHARLEMAGNE AND HIS MERRY MEN STOPPED AT A SPECSAVERS IN ORDER TO CLARIFY THAT GARIATH WAS INDEED A PARROT AND NOT A CHICKEN.   SAID SPECSAVERS THEN EXPLODED TO REVEAL EDWARD THATCH A.K.A. BLACKBEARD WHO HATCHED A CUNNING PLAN TO GET DOC'S GROUP.  SAID PLAN INVOLVED HORRIBLE MUSIC, POOR CROSS-DRESSING, AND REFERENCES TO GREEK MYTHOLOGY.    THEIR MINDS WARPED BY THE ATTEMPTS AT MUSIC, DOC STARTED TO MOVE TOWARD THE CLIFF THAT THE REST OF THE GANG, MINUS ELFY WHO WAS FLOATING AROUND CHARLEMAGNE'S EAR, WAS MAKING THEIR WAY DOWN ON ROPE.   AFTER ZAEL THREW DOWN SOME SICK DANCE MOVES TO A OLD MEME, CHARLEMAGNE RECOGNIZED HIS SKILLZ, SCARLET HAD A SMALL BREAKDOWN, AND JON THREW AN AXE......DOC RELEASED A FAIRY

THE GROUP WAS TAKEN TO A SMALL ISLAND, SCATTERED THROUGH OUT WITH JON, SCARLET, BEN, BYRN, AND DOC ON THE BEACH WITH SOME GIANT URCHINS.  ZAEL WAS SOMEWHERE ELSE DOING ZAEL THINGS.   BEN AND BYRN WENT TO GET SUPPLIES, JON SLICED THROUGH AN URCHIN SPINE, SCARLET GOT ALL PISSY AT DOC.......and  then insane cyborg gnomes crashed a spaceship into where Doc and co are.

It is. I just made the suggestion that we're easing into it. Makes more sense for the crew that was in the one-mile feasting radius to still feel the effects, but not for the fauna and wildlife of the far-away island.

You are correct, sir. Fully restored magic immediately upon 24 hours or Chill's next post. Since he posted almost immediately after using the gift, its effect only lasted minutes. It's magic, it doesn't require a warm up period.

The magic thing makes more sense to me to gradually come back, as opposed to BANG, suddenly back. But that's just me. If y'all want your magic back that's up to you :) I'm probably gonna play around with it with Zael some more - though Murdock did indeed recover, so maybe it's just Zael's magic that's busted... WHO KNOWS I WONDER!

You guys don't use the "show unread posts since last visit" button? Up by your avatar and greeting? That's a godsend for this forum. Keeps you up to date very easily. I wish more places had that.

I literally haven't seen the front page of this forum in a long time because I just go directly to the "show unread posts" page.

I think it's a reference to Gariath's post.    To clear things up for anyone who is confused, M.R. Mathias was a self-published author who a little over two years ago threw a tantrum over the thread for his book.   There was a lot of back-and-forth, he acted terribly and egotistical, and...honestly you can find the general idea from reading the site post about it.   (Which is the fifth hit when googling his name, which says a lot).

He's pretty much been a site joke around certain older members of the site, due to his rather inflated views of himself and his writing.  (Hence the tantrum over the thread movement, how DARE they say he is a mere small press or self-published author! He has 92k twitter followers! He outsells Tolkein, Goodkind, and Hobb. [Which he obviously doesn't])    Add to the fact that he isn't that good, (I've looked at his writing, he isn't), and well...he's an easy target.

Come in next week, when I'll tell you the legend of Eye Of Argon.

On a scale of 1 to Dan Brown, he's the love child of Goodkind and Stephanie Meyers mixed with a bit of John Grisham for good measure.

I don't know. I've only read an excerpt of one of his books, and that was enough to turn me off. Amateur prose. Bad dialogue.

He's honestly not that bad.  There's definitely worse writers out there, myself included.   Let me see if I can find an excerpt.

Quote from: M.R. Mathias
The dragon was fierce and quick, but it seemed to enjoy playing the cat to Shaella’s mouse. It gleefully toyed with the brave little girl, who wielded the insignificantly magical sword, and more than a few times, had intentionally kept from killing her, out of sheer curiosity.

Shaella had spun, twirled, dove, and twisted out of the way of the dragon’s razor-sharp claws, its whip-like tail, and its fiery maw so many times now, that she had exhausted herself. She was certain that the beast could’ve destroyed her at any time. She was glad that it let her survive long enough for her reinforcements to arrive. It was their turn to occupy it now. She had to catch her breath.

I was a mod during the whole Mathias incident.  It was super awkward, from what I recall.  I'm sure my posts might still be around.  It wasn't just that he was a bad writer.  It was that he was a bad writer that thought he was the next Martin.  Or whomever.  His stuff was full of stock and cliche.

Anyhoo, what's going on with our game here?  We seem to have lost some people, both in and out of the plot.

I'm thinking Cole is still recovering a bit from the magic.  He can give himself clothes, and maybe pull off a cool trick to get rid of the latest evil.

SO SCARLET READ FROM HER WEIRD REALITY BOOK AND TOOK AWAY THE AWESOME CYBORG GNOMES AND READ SOMETHING THAT MADE THE QUEST SEEM ALL BAD AND STUFF.

MEANWHILE CHARLEMAGNE WOKE UP AND SENT OUT HIS LEMUR ARMY BECAUSE MONKEYS ARE SO LAST SEASON.

COLE (WHICH IS...YOU) DECIDED THAT LEMURS OBVIOUSLY MEAN CHARLEMAGNE HAD TO PAY NOW WHILE JON (WHICH IS...ME) FLIPPED OUT BECAUSE....WELL THIS IS A CRAZY RANDOM MESS OF STUFF.   THIS LED TO INFO DUMP FROM DOC.

The only way to combat a bad story is with an even worse story.  I suspect if someone recites 50 Shades of Grey or a Dan Brown novel we might defeat MR Mathias. Might also be a good idea for Lord Charlie to form an actual plan for world domonation so Chil amd crew have something to work against.

Is that a challenge?  I mean, I'm iffy on posting the former because this is a "family" forum after all and you're hard-pressed to find any excerpts without "adult" themes.   As for Dan Brown though?

Quote from: Dan Brown
Langdon took a step toward the river, but he could see the waters were bloodred and too deep to traverse. When Langdon raised his eyes again to the veiled woman, the bodies at her feet had multiplied. There were hundreds of them now, maybe thousands, some still alive, writhing in agony, dying unthinkable deaths. . .consumed by fire, buried in feces, devouring one another. He could hear the mournful cries of human suffering echoing across the water.

The woman moved toward him, holding out her slender hands, as if beckoning for help.

"Who are you?!" Langdon again shouted.

In response, the woman reached up and slowly lifted the veil from her face. She was strikingly beautiful, and yet older than Langdon had imagined -- in her sixties perhaps, stately and strong, like a timeless statue. She had a sternly set jaw, deep soulful eyes, and long, silver-gray hair that cascaded over her shoulders in ringlets. An amulet of lapis lazuli hung around her neck -- a single snake coiled around a staff.

Langdon sensed he knew her. . .trusted her. But how? Why?

She pointed now to a writhing pair of legs, which protruded upside down from the earth, apparently belonging to some poor soul who had been buried headfirst to his waist. The man's pale thigh bore a single letter -- written in mud -- R.

R? Langdon thought, uncertain. As in . . . Robert? "Is that. . . me?"

The woman's face revealed nothing. Seek and find, she repeated.

Without warning, she began radiating a white light. . .brighter and brighter. Her entire body started vibrating intensely, and then, in a rush of thunder, she exploded into a thousand splintering shards of light.

Folks and ladyspoons!
I'm probably gonna be a bit scarce over the next week or so (several jobs keeping me away from home from this weekend onwards), so do with Zael as you will/need.

For reference, he intends to hop aboard Murdock in his true form - a giant, spiky scaled mer-hound that's bigger a bus - in order to find y'all. His sense of smell is rediculous (Murdock's of course :P) and I think Zael is planning to, slowly, figure out some way of pulling out his master's soul from his own. Perhaps using a dead body/empty vessel. Those gnomes might do the trick...

But as for the consequences of that kind of action on Zael's own body...
If it gets to that point before I return, just have him black out for a few days until I can come and clear things up :)

All the best, guys and gals. Have fun!

See you on the other side!

(ohmygawd - I've checked, and Lost ran between 2004-2010 - it started 10 YEARS AGO!!!! :-\)

Go buy the box sets now, it is up there in my favourite series of all time!!!

If we're in Lost, does that make Eclipse Hurley?

I'm sure Hurley knew how to use punctuation... (sorry! real spelling/grammar pedant here!)
Hurley ended up being the last guardian :)

I never watched a single episode. It doesn't appeal to me ^_^
And yeah, I am...really young. [But not as young as you think]

I just never got around to it.   It's one of those things where you mean to watch it, but haven't yet.   Plus I'm iffy on J.J. Abrams as a whole, so there's that.

I suppose I'm youngish.   On one hand, I'm older than Zael and Chill.  On the other hand, I'm still only 23.  I'm pretty sure that everyone else here is older than me, save for Yuan.   Though, I do have a tendency to prefer media from "before my time" so it doesn't really matter one way or the other.

As for you Ben, it's too soon to do another recap.

Yes Ben, go read last recap, there's only a couple of posts afterwards ;D

And sure, I understand. I guess I'm just really passionate about it, and was mad at people who said it got worse with time. It was also the very first time I even heard of J.J.Abrams, so there were no assumptions.
And I also read your posts as "I don't know what that is", instead of "I wasn't really interested in watching" - which given the amount of people talking about it, seemed a bit impossible.
Must be like me and 'Breaking Bad' then, I never watched it nor am I interested in watching hehe

Lost was awesome. Never saw the first season, though, primarily on account of being so darn young. Yeah, I think the only person I'm older than is Yuan and Charlie. Another reason why you shouldn't put me in charge.

In other news, WHY AM I THE ONLY PIRATE? (Took them long enough, made and joined another writing group after that anyway, which died too.) And why isn't it singular? That's driving me insane.

I love how it's two of the youngest people here who are running this thing. And yeah, the last time I was really active I was the second youngest forum member - and Jian only has a couple days on me.

Aren't I a pirate too...? It makes me so sad that the writing group died. :( Some really good stuff in there.

As for an earth-domination plot, I don't really have time for more than one or two posts a day, and definitely not enough to run a full campaign like that. If you guys want baddies to fight, you'll probably have to set them up yourself.

Whatever happened to Jian? I haven't seen him around much here.

Also I honestly thought Charlemagne was like 29 or something.   I would've not pegged you for somebody who's 15 (16? Somewhere around there, right?)

Well, as long as Scarlet doesn't erase them from existence again.   (No offense meant, Scarlet.)

Though now apparently we're in a castle haunted by the ghosts of former dark lords.....and we're naked.

We do have a plot, or at least we should try for one.  Seems like Brynn has a better clue than the rest at the moment and Charlie Mane can't be the big bad for the first season.  Can we veto the random castle teleportation and just be stuck on a mysterious island with a mysterious amulet?

The plot would be helped if all our people didn't have a general viewpoint of "Oh, well I guess that happened now".   I mean, nobody has really cared that one of Charlie's group is now hanging around Doc's group, or Scarlet's reality-warping book, or where Elfy went, or pretty much any of the random stuff that has gone on since this started.    I mean Doc's group FOUGHT GODZILLA and nobody seems to care.   Except for my guy, but then again I'm the only one who seems to be trying to actively keep track of everything.

I think we knew it would be chaotic in the first place. Let's just try to keep the fun.
Probably the main point of this exercise is not just for the entertainment but for the exposure to new ideas and improving ourselves as writers on a whole.

The main problem is that we're a little bit uncoordinated. We take things out of context too often, which isn't so much a problem since it brings a bit of humor. All we need to do is to always keep in mind the intentions and goals of each group and work towards it. And we need to recognize certain limitations to plot-changing. Once there is a problem or conflict, we have to work towards solving it, not magically poofing it out of existence. no character should be that powerful 3:

Also, try to know each character so that if you're using them, they wont seem to behave...out of character?

Yeah, I mean, I'm not saying we shouldn't keep the fun.  It's just there's a fine line between fun and chaotic and confusing and not fun at all.   You have to have a base of normal in order to decide what is chaotic

Then we should impose some new rules.
And making a thread similar to 'Who is who' would be nice, where everyone could state the type of person his/her character is. What they would or would not do?
A bit of familiarization would do some justice, eh?

Well, maybe just a more detailed Who is who,  I mean, yes according to the main rules...

3) If you want to make a big change to the story, drop out, join late, or anything that would seriously impact the game, post it here first. We won't stop you - we can just plan around you. And find humorous reasons for why you've done it.

It's the parts in bold that seemed to be missing.  For instance Gariath's major castle change wasn't posted here and there seems to no planning around it.  It's either "just accept it" or "it never happened".   Half the fun of this should be our characters reacting to the crazy stuff.

Gahh. You're making me have to think up rules. Um... Um... Have fun? No? Too confusing? Well, um...

Okay. Some things: Plot: About to clarify. In my next post. Okay? What? Rule #3, you say? I'll explain later. Basically, don't throw curveballs as big as Gariath's last one. I can work around it, just try and refrain from doing any of that in the future. And as much as I hate to say it, don't post it here. That detracts from the fun. Truly, it does. I'd rather you PM people than blurt out the randomness because then it loses its charm.

The one thing we need to start focusing on now is not cutting scenes. That's our biggest problem. We create rabid lemurs, and they're shot down in two posts. I admit this was my fault, but I'm fixing this before it becomes too much. Scarlet, tone down on your "reality-bending books." This overpowered switching of the plot applies to everyone. Make it in character. If all the lemurs die, make it because we set traps up beforehand. If you can't solve it, pass it to the next guy. My recommendation would be keep the post small, but post. Even if you just check in, post a line or two. A single quip is fine. We could've stretched Mathias's storytelling some more and done some really good laughs.

What I'm getting at is stretch everything as far as you can. We tried that with Godzilla's fight. Plus, a lot of people were on at the time. That helped immensely. Did everyone enjoy the way that was done? That's when I felt that we were closest to the kind of sheer insanity I felt in the last RPG. And that's what I'm trying to emulate here. Fun is the biggest thing, and I don't want y'all to be confused. That detracts from the fun, and creates stuff like Jon's recaps. (Though they are fun in their own right.)

Okay. Breathe.

If you have any more problems you don't want to express on here, PM me or Charlie. We'll try and fix everything. Hopefully.

Now off to fix this plot. ;)

No no no, at all. I'm not a writer, and I don't want to be one, and people accepted this when I asked if I could hang around.

I fully agree that I'd rather see a bunch of 4-6 lines posts than big chapters "book-like".

I think there is a bit of confusion about what this is all about.  The last rpg was us just all being silly, def not a serious writing exercise!

Sorry about coming out of leftfield but I was rather bewildered. I might just sit this all out.  Far too many characters coming and going and bit put off by it being an actual writing exercise now.

Honestly, I'm not treating like an actual writing exercise, seems like an odd place to do so.

I think my main issue is I've never read the orginal rp (mostly since I can't find it), so I had no idea about how random things were and pretty much took it upon myself to find some middle ground between the ones who want all out random chaos and the ones apparently treating this as a writing exercise.    At least after I got my bearings in the introduction thread.

Well, improvement is why I'm sticking around, though not the only reason.

And sorry if my posts are a bit too, short-story-length as Scarlet pointed out  :P
It's that I dont post as regular, because Im not so active. In the current thread, I've only posted thrice (One being just a comment and not an addition to the story) while others posted up to eight times (random number, didnt count). If you were to add them up and stack them against my posts, they'd be equivalent. One long post works more for me than several small ones.
Title: Re: RPG: Rules, Questions, & Discussion

Yeah, this definitely isn't a writing exercise. If so, I think Eclipse would've been cut out in the beginning. But I could care less about punctuation or the likes, just so long as you're having fun, you understand what's going on, and you're doing something. I agree with Bea that I'd rather see 4-6 line posts than anything. I know I have a habit of abusing the "enter" key and info-dumping to settle the plot some, so let's hope I can hold off on that.

As for Dom, don't go! Your's are my favorite posts. But yeah, I can see why too many people coming and going would put you off. Unfortunately, we got stuck at a bad time with holiday, work, and college. We have to make do with what we got. It's not the best plan, at all, but I think we're doing better than what we could've. I'm sorry if we made you think this was a writing exercise. The most exercise we're going to get out of this is piecing together a strange plot. :D

And Jon, I would have loved for y'all to be able to read the first rpg to get a good feel for it. I wanted to read it just for fun and to get some pointers. However, one of the mods I asked said they couldn't. And that's all right. Quite frankly, I don't understand why Jennie or Marc archived them when they cleaned up the forum. Don't know what they cleaned up with it, but okay. Guess we can do without.

Yuan, if you can post short asides every now and then (the opposite of this, in fact) that would be lovely. If you can only stick to your short stories, that's fine, too. :P

Post by: Charlemagne on August 09, 2014, 12:29:00 AM
Okay, I kinda missed the "crisis" moment here, so my thoughts may not be too helpful, but here goes:

The problem with this RPG (at least as compared to the last one) is that there is no overweening goal, no competition between the two groups. As a result, everything feels a bit haphazard and random. With a goal that both groups can aim for, the plot becomes much more streamlined, and because everybody wants to get to the final goal, all "plot twists" have a clearly defined purpose. I know Gariath suggested that we try to set up a world domination scheme, but that's a bit too complicated for me.

What we need is some kind of race. The Amulet has clearly become the focus of the story - I would propose something to do with that. Maybe there's a twin, more powerful amulet that both parties learn about from the butler, and want to reach in order to hold ultimate power? I dunno, just a suggestion.

Anyway, these are my thoughts on this. Take 'em or leave 'em, it's up to you.

And sorry for making you sit through two extra-long posts in a row! I blame C. Hill. :P

Probably start with just the tentacles, which I imagine would be a lot like calamari or octopus - I'd probably braise it like octopus tentacles, do something Asian style.  Garlic, ginger, chili flake.  Maybe tempura batter and fry some of them, serve with a ginger-wasabi aioli.

Sorry for 'reality altering' stuff, but I was getting annoyed with the fanfic that showed up out of nowhere :-\ so I sort of brought the story back to where it was a half dozen posts earlier, or something.
Please don't be mad, and let's all go back to the beach and off the island - or further into the island. Wherever. Just not in the castle.
That's what we'd agreed here earlier too.

(but ok. feel free to say that Scarlet was the one breathing the nasty fumes and get back to where it was, if you want...)

Alright guys, I didn't think I'd have to say this, but stop with the reality altering stuff. Seriously. You're trying to fix confusion by creating more. I don't see the problem with this "fanfiction." Wouldn't consider it as such. That's like saying you have a problem with the Godzilla incident. Or Cthulhu. It's supposed to be random and fun. Switching the entire scenery every five seconds does not make it fun.

We change little things, start action and stuff, not change the plot or scenery unless it makes complete sense. High off fumes ranks up there with dream sequences.

Quote
Just not in the castle.
That's what we'd agreed here earlier too.

I'm not sure where we agreed to this. And I don't see the problem with it.

I probably sound more aggravated than I am. I'm more aggravated that I had to say this. Quite frankly, I don't see the confusion. It's only happened once with Gariath's post. Other than that, I think we're fine. I don't want this to be argumentative and changing willy-nilly. I don't want to have to write these posts. Just have fun and go with the flow.

If you have a problem, PM me or Charlie. But no more reality altering stuff.

Yes, Robin Williams has died.  He lived near my neighborhood in San Francisco and I saw him on the street several times.  The one brief interaction I had with him, telling him how important his work had been to me, he was very kind.  It's a loss and depression is no joke.

In honor of the old fool, Cole will now be Patch Adams.

Just thought I'd add something: Created a new RP on a different forum, with almost 20 people and counting. Things are hectic, and we've barely started. (namely because they don't want to start at the same place, and when they do, everybody attacks at once with hanging conversations. Nor can anybody "go with the flow" if it goes against their version of the plot.) I actually find it pretty funny, and scary. They want to make a Skype group chat to "get a sense of things."

Insane, I know. Really resisting the urge to jump the gun and throw everything down the crazy well. Which is to say, they don't know what nonsense I have up my sleeve yet, and I'm afraid they won't like it.

Also, I'm off my crutch with Doc. Using a posh, arrogant prick of a nobleman, so props to Charlie for the idea!

To make a long story short, I'm dealing with RPers that go for the prodigy magician orphan the first chance they get. Or shapeshifting crows. This is going to be interesting. Can't wait for the Ye Olde English coyotes to attack. Wonder how they'll make sense of that.

^ good to hear that, and that you're having fun with it :)

I was disappointed that ours just vanished, and also with myself that I wanted things to be so 'proper' and 'logical' hehehe You can't really get away from who you are deep down, right? ;)

Not at all. :p

I just wanted to clarify and thank all of y'all who were in these last few RPGs. It's great to have fantasy veterans around for this.

Hi.  Just looked at the last post dates on all the RPG threads, and none are very recent except for this one.

Is it crickets in the rest?

It is. Complications, among other things, brought it (they're all the same RPG) to a halt. If you want to start one up, you're more than welcome to, however!

And Xi, could you possibly lock those threads, considering we're probably never going to come back to them? (Aside from maybe this one.)

That was very definitely apart of the "among other things." :P Besides, I was waiting for Charlie to do it first. He had to be the real man.

Welcome to the 2015 Fantasy-Faction RPG, co-hosted by myself and the always illustrious Jmack!

We have a good bit planned for what's to come, and promise we'll actually see this one through. Time is set for 4 weeks starting today (Sunday 24th) to begin with, and each week'll have its own adventure. Right now, pick a side. Make a nice entrance. Don't worry, both'll be great. (Though mine might be better.) Past knowledge of the 2 former RPGs on here is not necessary. Might even put up a brief overview for anybody interested, seeing as I'll be make some references to them, but  as I said, not necessary.

Anyway, rules are on the first post of this thread. I might write up some edited version for later, but all you really need to know is have fun, crack jokes, and go with the flow. This is supposed to be a way to let off some steam and enjoy life. Possibly celebrate FF's 100K posts or something. First one actually got me into becoming a regular on this site, so if that sways you, you're more than welcome in our motley crew.

So without any further ado, Up Helly Aah!

Let's ride!

I think you decide on your character and what they have and don't have. I put some hints in my thread about character slots I'd like to fill. In addition, I'll be PM'ing my crew with (hopefully) fun ideas once I see what folks have chosen.

But I do think Chill is planning a Who is Who thread to capture what folks decide on.

May I just say you write too much for your own good, Jmack... you're scaring people off!
It needs to be short and sweet ;D

Everyone, look, I'm not a 'writer', so I just write. Whatever looks funny at the time - and gawd knows my brain feels foggy most of the time, hehe. So if *I* can do it, so can you.
Go on, go aaaaaawwwwwwnnnnn ;D

Henry, you seem to be helping Jmack :P

(and by the way, I think I'll stop liking posts here... I like them all, so it's kinda pointless, hehe - I'll save them for the other forum places)

Am I required to do the Whose Who thing? Because I kind of want to remain mysterious. At least for a time.

You could do like Idlewilder did in the last, but if you don't want to THATS fine. Mystery is great!

EDIT: Stupid phone. Stop randomly capitalizing. (But I will leave it, cos that's fun.)

Take your time, Eclipse. Wouldn't want to spoil your birthday!

Ahem, place is shaping up nicely. Seems now we've got a crazy Jarl, a double agent, a master thief, some timid shadow master, a cat, a draconic from another dimension, and a blabbering cook. Also have a gunslinger, a wizard-for-hire/prophetess, and a crazy old pirate.

Still taking applications for anybody from Scarlet's ring to infiltrate the Temple of Atku, possibly that missing heir(ess), any colorful person waltzing by with perhaps a history, a bard for Jmack, and considering Oggy's probably the fighter (I know she wouldn't admit it), that might be scratched off the list. Unless a drunken Nord wants to make an entrance.  ;D

6 v 3 so far. I like the odds.

Recruitment's to go till Saturday I think. Then we set off for that tower Scarlet mentioned. I guess Jmack is sailing for greener pastures, but then, that's his plot line. (What? What plot?!)

Hi, I wanted to reply to Rukaio, but the story thread wasn't appropriate - this comment:
(Ultament, no offense, but can you not automatically assume the rest of the group is willing to go along with your plan? Because it makes it slightly awkward to justify when I really don't agree.)

You're falling into a begginers' problem (I suffered the same last year, now I know better, hehe), thinking that things have to make sense and be logical.

The rules state that
2) The story gets moved along by posts.

So even if you don't really like the direction that the previous posts have taken (gawd knows that happened to me a lot last year ;D), you still have to go along with the flow.

I hope you don't mind these comments, I know I suffered a bit because of it, and might even have derailed the story, so I'd hate to see others making the same mistakes - learn from experience :)

I should note, I didn't say he had to not automatically assume etc, etc. I was just asking if he could refrain from it since it made things fairly awkward when I responded. I know the rules say we can do anything with each others characters, but that doesn't mean we can't ask if something's bothering us. Obviously, it's up to ultiment as to whether he listens or not, but I just wanted to make it clear that that was bothering me.

Specifically, I should note, it wasn't so much the character agreeing that made things awkward for me, but more that you didn't go the full way and take us down the plughole entirely. You ended it at a spot which implied the next step was discussion but, since you already made both character agree with said plan, there's nothing really to discuss. The only real big next step would be to go down the plughole which is what makes it awkward for the people who disagree with said plan. It would've been best either to leave it open as to what other characters think of the plan (like I just did with Kassin scouting) or just go all the way with it.

I admit I do tend to get fairly fussy and overbearing about these things though and this insanely free-tempo stuff may not be my best fit. Ultiment is still obviously free to do whatever he wants and to ignore me entirely. I just wanted to say my bit.

I stopped it where I did because I figured someone else had a better vision of what was down the hole then I did. I didn't want to accidentally ruin anything. I apologize if it made it a bit uncomfortable. Plus, looking back, the scouting thing was a brilliant idea on your part. So it all worked out. Or will work out. Hopefully.

No worries, anyone!

And it's all crazy fun, isn't it?
I never thought of the lake until someone else triggered it.
Then I had no idea where the treasure room was relative to the lake, but that fixed itself.
I wanted Raptori involved, so the plug came about.
I thought there'd a totally bizarre case of ending up in an upside down parallel universe version of the castle, but now I'm going to figure out what to do about the latest posts... if I even get there in time! (Busy, busy work day).

Hoot-and-a-half folks! Hoot-and-a-half.

And SB, I think here at the start you're helping in exactly the right way.
And RA and UK, keep it going!

Yes to all what Jmack said. Even to the hoot-and-a-half part, which I had to look up (and I still don't fully know the meaning of).  ;D   It's "fun", right?

Of course, if something is bothering one or some of us, we can talk about it. That way we can solve things and everybody can keep having fun with the RPG.

This method of role-playing is so wacky and unpredictable (and fun) that it, in my opinion, can't really follow any kind of logic or even rules. And I think that a big part of its charm comes from trying to bail out our own characters from situations (and even mindsets?) the other players get them in. Does that make sense?

Hi, these are specific/time-constrained events and they only work when there are many active posters, constantly posting and advancing the story.
Unfortunately (?) things have been a lot calmer in the past months, so it's not really the right time to have a new one.
Maybe it'll change :)

You can read the old ones, they are extremely funny ;D
