RPG: Rules, Questions, & Discussion
« on: July 27, 2014, 09:54:49 PM »
RULES:

1) Have fun. This is the big one. If you're not having fun, or you are disrupting the fun that someone else is having, then you're doing it wrong. The key is to relax - this will get crazy - and just enjoy it.

2) The story gets moved along by posts. This means that if Person 1 posts something, and it involves Person 2's character, that actually happens to that character. If I say that Chill is making squirrel dumplings with me while there's a huge naval battle going on (yes, this was a thing that happened), then Chill is making squirrel dumplings with me. This is especially helpful when someone doesn't post for a few days - their character can stay in the story through other people's posts.

3) If you want to make a big change to the story, drop out, join late, or anything that would seriously impact the game, post it here first. We won't stop you - we can just plan around you. And find humorous reasons for why you've done it.

4) Don't be a jerk. This kinda goes without saying, but still. So much of this is about individuals, all it takes is one person going too far and it all goes to hell. This does not mean you can't be funny. Don't worry about being PC. Don't worry if someone will be insulted because you had their character say something silly. That's fine. Hell, I'm pretty sure my character ended up sleeping with transgender amazons in the last RPG. Just don't make it about the player - keep it about the character.

5) Have fun. This is really, really, really the most important thing. If we break every other rule (and we probably will), this is the one that has to stay in place. Yes, this rule is mandatory.

This is a very low-key game. We're pretty relaxed. Just have some goddamn fun.

Is this how you conquered the scary castle? :P

There was a lot more evil involved: we had evil tanks, evil soldiers, and most importantly, "Evil Al" Yankovic, but yes. The principle is the same.

Evil fun, I take it?

A *very* basic question: what do you do?
Is this writing a story by pieces?

A *very* basic question: what do you do?
Is this writing a story by pieces?

Yes, but with interaction.

Here is an example from the last RPG:

Quote from: Hound
Suddenly the doors flew open, and the Hound strode in dragging a figure tied up in a sack behind him.  Deftly the Hound cut the sack free revealing a disheveled figure.  "Right, world's greatest writer since Tolkien, here is a willing audiences who want to spend the night being regaled with stories of your fantastical magical kingdom."
"Really" the figure smiled "Right folks, here begins a 70k word adventure!"
"Enjoy" the Hound chuckles, "And by the way pirates, over in the other tavern Mark Lawrence is sitting in the corner reading extracts from King of Thorns, also I'm not Scottish, so I pay a hell of a lot better".

With that the Hound marched out, chuckling to himself.

Quote from: Lor
Lor got to her feet, albeit a little unsteadily, and slammed her tankard onto the wood, watching it topple and roll off. Then she looked around the room, spotting some guardsmen loitering near the bar.

"You! You need to arrest this" she nudged the figure on the floor with her toe. "For crimes against being a decent human being." She moved off towards the door, fists clenched. "I've got a pirate to deal with."
"Sire, I had no need of that hypothesis." (Laplace)

Thank you, ScarletBea, for reminding me that I need to make a...

SECONDARY RULES POST

While the first post dictates the behavior of the players, hopefully this post will make it a little clearer how this is actually supposed to work. Every participant in the game makes a character. This isn't like D&D, you don't roll for skill points or anything boring. All you do is decide on a personality, how you want your character to act, and everything else naturally follows. This can be done entirely on personal experience, or you can make someone completely up. For example, C.Hill's character is a Texan gunslinger (I assume this is 100% autobiographical), whereas mine is an evil Dark Lord (likewise).

The game is run by posting. Right now the story is taking place in the "recruitment" threads, when we get moving we'll probably post others. "Arry throughout the pond that leads to the isle of the naturalists" was one from the last RPG, "Errol's Betrayal" was another. Players will post from the perspective of their own character, as Xia so helpfully pointed out in the examples above - Lor's posts were from Lor's POV, Gariath's from his character's POV. Again, one poster can influence the actions taken by other characters.

Most of the deeper gameplay should hopefully become obvious as we start moving forward. Hope that clears up any questions on gameplay, please post here/PM me or C.Hill with any more!

I'll bite. The last one was loads of fun. I'm going to be away for most of August (holidays. Yay!), but other than that I can join in.
I will expand your TBR pile.

Oh another question. Can we have fluff? Fluff was very important last time.

I seem to have made you an irritable Britishman, Elfy. Sorry.

But yes. Fluff is essential to this process.

I think this sounds fab, but:

disclaimer: I'm not a writer, nor want to be one. Please excuse my silly basic bits of story

And eeeek! I've just realised I posted on the wrong thread, I didn't want to help the evil Lord, I wanted to be on the hero's side! That will just teach me not to post when I'm supposed to be in work meetings...
Can I change? Pretty please?
(no one seems to have posted after me, so I'll delete there... *sneaks out*)

I'm not a writer either, but I joined in (late) with the last one and it was a lot of fun.  :D
