Great picture!

I agree with you, in that Kaladin wasn't special by birth, as (correct me if I'm wrong) during the scene where Bridge 4 saves Dalinar's army, Syl says something like 'I did this to you Kaladin' or 'Something has changed us both.'

I'm not sure about Shallan, but if she is special, that means that the princess is also 'special by birth'.

I've just started a re-read of Magician by Feist. It's been a while since I re-read anything, and felt like I needed some old friends!

Hi all!

It's been quite a while, but due to popular demand (possibly) I'm back.

Looking forward to delving back into the forums again!

Oh sorry, I missed the debut bit.

2011? Was Desert Spear release then? Maybe Republic of Thieves as well?

I hate poorly thought out names of cities or countries, things like 'Stormwall' or 'Steeltown'. There are no cities like that anywhere ever. It's off putting and unrealistic. Find a proper name!!

Come to Oxford and have a drink in The Eagle and Child and bask in the reflected glory of Tolkien and Lewis!

I finished it yesterday and it's officially my favourite book. Straight to the top. I have to review it now, so I'll try not to just gush all over the page.

Meaning that SF isn't serious literature? Yeah. Not the best quote!

Almost finished The Night Circus which I am reviewing for FF, and it's possibly one of the better books I've ever read.

Now I'm going to read Legion and The Emperor's Soul by Brandonbot.

I hadn't. No one seems to be talking about it. :)

I was the same way before FF, before my TBR pile exploded in a burst of paper cuts and kindle shards.

Nowadays, as I write reviews for two sites and still want to read what I want to read I find I have multiple books on the go, 3 or 4 at any point. I definitely think that I don't connect as well with a book if I keep switching between them all. I'm considering reverting to my old approach so I can start really ENJOYING the books again.

Fantasy Book & Author Discussion / The Daylight War (Spoilers)
« on: April 21, 2013, 02:57:30 PM »
I enjoyed the book, but it's the weakest of the three for me. There were loads of things that took me out of the action.

Issues:

Why is it called the Daylight War? There is no war in the daylight, just 2 large battles at night (which, for Jardir) were easily won.

Inevera's back story. It was... Interesting in parts, but virtually irrelevant to the story. I felt the same with Jardir's back story in Desert Spear.

In reality, this book covers 6 weeks of time and apart from the battles with the minds it doesn't advance the story as much as it should have.

If I hear Renna use Arlen's full name Or robes described as diaphanous again I may scream.

Inconsistent use of demons. Rather than invent new scenarios to introduce us to new demons (as he did with Clay or water demons) he shoved Stone and Field demons where there weren't any before.

Loads of D.E.M with Arlen's powers.
