Yeah... problem with the series is that we're looking at 2018/2019 for book 3.... maybe.

From what I've been told and heard: the marketing department have no idea when book 3 is coming out, but they've been told it probably won't be 2017. Rumour has it Pat's Editor hasn't seen anything even resembling a draft of book 3 yet.

Although I sound like I'm giving Pat a hard time here, I'm not, I'm just warning you that you could be in for a wait. All that said, I think you could read book 1 and absolutely love it without needing to read book 2 anytime soon. Book 2 felt more of a bridge for books 2 to 3, so I think you could read book 1 - LOVE IT - and come back to book 2 in a year or two.

I read it and agree it was definitely fun. I feel like I did have more criticisms for it than most people I know who've read it. I did start to feel like the two main characters were Mary Stu and Gary Stu and I think maybe I wasn't in the right mood for some of the tropes. And the ending seemed pretty rushed to me. But, once again, it was a fun read even with my nit picks about it (I'll definitely read the next one).

I thought Nettles was going to turn out to be Hope at the start. In fact, I do kind of wonder if perhaps that was the original plan *grin*. However, it worked very well to have both of them eventually.

I'm not sure I'd call the ending 'rushed', but I'd call it 'overly convenient'. I guess I overlooked it and accepted it based on what I discussed in the review though: it kind of had to be in order to keep the fun, pacing and length. I can't go into it without really spoiling things for those who are yet to pick it up, but if they'd made the ending more realistic I think you'd need another hundred or two hundred pages to form the new bonds and I think the book at 600 pages (ish?) was already pushing the boundaries of a first book with that kind of lighthearted tone.

Hope And Red is the most fun book I’ve read in 2016 and one of the first I will recommend to people, from now on, who ask for a book similar to that of Scott Lynch’s Gentleman Bastards series or Brent Weeks’s Night Angel trilogy...

Anyone read it yet? Excited to see where the second book goes...

General Discussion / #22 Pushups Challenge
« on: August 09, 2016, 01:11:08 PM »
I've been called out by Jonathan Ashman for the push-up challenge!

The challenge is 22 push-ups for 22 days to raise awareness on the fact that 22 AMERICAN VETERANS will commit suicide today.

I don't think the fact I'm British gives any reason not to take part. 22 people is a truly sad, startling number of people and people should be aware of it.

I don't want to call people out, but if this is something you feel you can do then please take part too...

Looks great, Bea! :)

Laura and Steven posted pictures of theirs this week too:

Anyone own either of these?

I've been given them to paint for a friend and the miniatures are really good... only problem I have is that it will take approximately 5 years to paint all the models (based on how slow I paint stuff), so I'm not sure anyone will get to play them anytime soon :P

Marc Aplin is mentioned in Drakenfeld (Drakenfeld #1) by Mark Charan Newton in the Acknowledgements at the end of the book  ;D

Somehow I've been in four acknowledgements, and even been named as a character in a book! :O

Acknowledgements: Myke Cole, Sebastien De Castel, James Barclay & Mark Charan Newton. Character in Sarah Pinborough's book :)

FF needs money? But we all saved billions of Credits over the last years!  ;)

Seriously though, I think Patreon is a great idea and totally justified for a site like this. :)

Hope your gf and you are doing okay. It's hard to lose a loved one.

Ha - indeed. And thanks, Xiagan that is very kind.

This sounds awesome! I only recently started getting some money every month, so I'll be happy to throw 5 dollars to the website. Sorting some stuff out first, and then you'll have it. Since I've become so active here, and would love to become more involved, there's no question in my mind.

That's incredibly kind and I can't tell you how rewarding it is to hear how much people are enjoying the site. You've made my day :)

Great idea, hopefully this works out and we can get some more stuff running! @Overlord if you ever need anything to do with web development we'd love to help out; we don't have a lot of money, so donating time would make a lot more sense for us.  :)

Re: paying fees, Paypal and banks usually have hidden fees embedded in their currency conversion rates. Paypal recently increased theirs; at the time we were using Paypal to transfer money from the UK to Finland (£ to €), so it was a noticeable difference for us.

It's only a few percent though, so for something like this it's not a big deal.

Thank you for the info, Raptori and I will be sure to call you up on the help at some point ^_^

Couldn't really find an answer on patreon so will ask here cuz you guys are (at times) smart.
Is there an option for single occasional deposits without having to commit to monthly ones?
Reason is I might be able to spare something every now and then but I can't commit cuz saving money for a place etc life stuff.

No, for that you'd be better off using Paypal to make a donation as and when you feel the urge ^_^

Our paypal is Marc@Fantasy-Faction.com or you can use the website's donation system here:

Hit the 'donate' button :)

Thanks so much for considering doing either of these ^_^

I've been sending Marc a monthly amount for a while now via PayPal. I send £, and they get posted to my bank account as $. I've never paid a bank fee. Since Patreon uses PayPal, I really hope it will be as seamless for all you folks as it has been for me.

Just switched my independent payment over to Patreon.

Here's my view, folks. It would be lovely if Marc had some dry powder for doing cool things. And it would be cool to get special do-dads for our contributions.

Honestly, those are secondary for me. I just believ that those of us who can help offset the costs of running this place really should. And no one who is scraping together money each month for rent or etc. should feel the slightest need to help with the funding. Of course, you can. I'm just saying that it's good to put our money where our passion is, assuming we have any money.  :)

I'd love to hear back from Marc that he got a huge response from all us regulars. And then there's those folks on Facebook...

Thanks so much, Jmack for this and all the support that came before it too!

As you say, no one who has any financial difficulties should even consider donating to the site. Rather, this is just a request of those who have a couple £/$ left over a month that they maybe spend on a magazine they don't really want (like I used to do with Men's Health and then chuck it away in less than 20 minutes!) and could consider contributing that at Fantasy-Faction's long-term plans instead.

People have been really kind so far, I think we will do OK. The awards target is insane, but I've factored in that we'd need to pay judges (potentially), hire a venue and commission awards. What I've tried to do with all the targets, actually, is set the higher price that will guarantee things get done. I don't want to disappoint anyone as we have in the past when things have fallen through, so these targets are at a level where if we hit them then we can press ahead pretty much right away.

Thanks again :)

I'll check this better when I'm home, but can you confirm that the payments are in dollars?
I'm wondering about how much in fees english banks will charge for regular payments, either us or you, to convert from pounds :-\

That's a good point, sadly it is in USD >.< I don't think you will face any taxes and 'hopefully', because I had to fill out a tax form and have Paypal, it will be minimal for me too! When researching, Patreon seemed the most highly recommended and trusted. Thanks for considering, Bea ^_^
