Re: Interviewed by That Thorn Guy... I think the coolest thing about that interview was finding out that you're an MMA fighter. You and Eldon Thompson (former college quarterback) pretty much shatter that whole stupid myth about fantasy/scifi fans being pointy-ear wearing nerds who live in our parents basements and never kissed a girl/boy.

Re: Interviewed by That Thorn Guy... Besides everything else Mark has the time for an unofficial blog? Does that man sleep at all? Cool to know, though. :) And awesome that he mentioned our writing contest. :)

Re: Fantasy-Faction Grim Gathering: April 10th. F-F Big Breakfast: April 11th. Glad everyone's having an ohmygawdohmygawd kind of time.  :)
I'm sitting here paying bills.  :P
Listening to an album on which the Duke Ellington and Count Bassie bands were having a collaboration/battle royale. So there's that.  ;D

Re: Grace of Kings by Ken Liu Here's the review of it I wrote April 10th on the Amazon website:

I've just finished and am rereading Ken Liu's "The Grace of Kings." This is more than a story. James Joyce's "Ulysses" experimented with literary styles and the writing of a novel; Ken is doing something similar here. He is using techniques that are not traditionally seen in English-language SFF (perhaps never seen before at all in such SFF), and he is also integrating the writing of short stories with the writing of novels and the writing of non-prose in an astonishing display of literary amalgamation. I don't know if I am explaining this clearly enough. It's a great story and a work of art—unique in method, content, and genre. It is something one can enjoy purely as a reader, but also something one can learn from as a writer, and appreciate in awe as a student of literature. It's honed genius.

Re: Paying for a Writing Group?
Cheers, Bea! I shall remember all of that :-)

No one is asking you to pay to be involved in your writing group... we are talking about offering another option for those who want it.

The OP posted a very small part of my conversation. Here are 'some' other bits:

My idea is that you are really paying the admin to keep things flowing and setting the exercises and study material. You are not paying for critique as that would cost a fortune, that comes in return for providing critique to others in the group which would be a condition of membership.

The group will rely on me making it awesome. I'm considering guest webinars with authors and discussions with them on certain topics. Kind of like a college course style - all in a bid of keeping involved writers motivated and with their eye on the prize :)

It won't be for everyone. But those who want something a bit more structured and assurance that someone is chasing others on their behalf may find it useful.

A more structured course with guest webinars with authors and discussions on certain writing topics, sounds like it would be hugely useful to people, and I'd imagine people more serious about improving their writing would be happy to pay guest authors a little beer-money for their time (sounds fair to me).

Nanowrimo works in large part because of community interaction with other writers, but also that it has a deadline urging you to get writing now and not a nebulous later, so I can see a more structured writing group could be beneficial to people.

Re: Fantasy-Faction Con 2016
Jmack, that can't be possible! Really??

Probably not.  :-[
But many months notice is very useful for such things.

Re: Fantasy-Faction's next Grim Gathering is coming... I haven't worked out the details with @Eurog, so we're not sure what method of transportation we'll be using from Edinburgh, but the direct flight from Edinburgh to Bristol sounds appealing.

If that messes anyone up, will probably stick with June 25th... I'm just wondering if most people chose June 25th on Facebook and Twitter because it gives them the most notice, in which case July might be even more appealing.

July makes it even more likely for us to attend, so yeah  :)

Re: Fantasy Hive
P.S. Love you all. Grateful for all you do to keep this site's heart beating. Merry Christmas :)

@Overlord I think your content is great, there's plenty of it, it's well paced and in complete honesty I think this forum is the best place on the internet-- at a time where the internet can be a scary place full of trolls and their hapless victims.

You've built a really wonderful community here and I think you deserve credit for having done something incredibly special.  Thank you and Merry Christmas back at you.
