this is an amazing site:
https://thedeathsentences.tumblr.com/

basically, they collect and publish the last sentences folks read before they abandoned a book to the dnf pile.

The first lesson is available now, and will provide an introduction to storytelling as well as help you hone your initial creation of things like setting and character. The lessons include both videos and activities for students to complete, and provides a general basis on which to build. The next instalment will focus on Character creation specifically, and others segments will address storyboarding, emotional appeal and more, with releases happening throughout 2017.

Fantasy Movies, Comic Books & Video Games / Rogue One -- It's here!
« on: December 15, 2016, 11:51:41 PM »
super excited to see this!  just booked our theater tickets for saturday afternoon.

it's crazy.  internal expectations for the movie are pretty tame.  i don't think anyone really knows what to expect since it's the first movie that's outside the main plotline and doesn't have a skywalker in it.

personally, i think it's going to kick ass.

so much excite!!

Monthly Writing Contest / Contest Anthology 2016
« on: December 06, 2016, 08:20:48 PM »
so, i had a thought in the shower this morning -- because, duh, that's where i do all my best thinking.

what if we took the top 3-5 stories each month and assembled a "Fantasy Faction Contest Anthology 2016"?  if you think about it, four stories per month, at 1500 words each, is 72k words.

also known as a book.

i was thinking we could even put it up on the kindle store (or somewhere) and the proceeds could go towards funding the server costs and author events and such for the site.  or, maybe even a professional editor for the 2017 edition.

while we poor, lowly authors wouldn't necessarily get paid for something we already do willingly for free, we'd hopefully get a skosh more name recognition out there in the wild, right?  of course, anyone can opt out of their stories being included any time.

as to how we'd determine which stories would be included, i was thinking choosing based on gold, silver, and bronze medals each month.  it should come out to 3-5 stories per month because we usually have ties and the like.

actually, lemme go back and look at the stories for this year.

stand by.

. . .

kk.  i'm back.

so, just going by 3rd place and better finishes, these are the stories through the first 10 months of this year that would make the theoretical cut:

Fantasy Resources / Robin Hobb on Writing Excuses Podcast
« on: October 14, 2016, 11:44:32 PM »
robin hobb showed up on the latest episode of writing excuses.

http://www.writingexcuses.com/2016/10/12/11-bonus-01-characterization-and-differentiation-with-robin-hobb/

she's wonderful.

mostly talking about writing nice characters and dialog.  i was fangirling that she starts stories like i do, with characters.  and i was loving all the solid thoughts -- again, that mirrored my own -- on how to write dialog and how each character has a unique voice.

my bubble of love was only a tiny bit punctured with the talk about her being a pantser after that.  but, if i was forced to guess, i probably would have called her as one.

Writers' Corner / Gender-Swapping the Bad Guy®
« on: September 24, 2016, 06:21:00 PM »
guys!  guys!

so, i'm pushing through my wip and am at the halfway point.  i'd already written/developed my main bad guy.  he's pretty awesome.  sorta-kinda like andross guile smashed together with ramsay bolton.  real class act, he is.

anyway.

i was looking at my casting, feeling a little light on foreground women characters.  thought for a moment, "hey, what if?"  and, boom!  danar became danari!

. . . and she's AWESOME!!  so much better!

man, having a badass villain is sooooo cool.

Writers' Corner / A Game Plan for Promoting Genre Fiction
« on: July 20, 2016, 02:11:10 PM »
raph koster showed this to me today.  (he's a game design guy)  i thought it was fascinating how it uses game design to build a marketing plan for your book.  it uses richard bartle's (another game design guy) taxonomy of player types to break down the strategies using the concept of an author being a performer/achiever/socializer/explorer type.
