General Discussion / Re: Politics and other ailments of the real world

@Lady Ty I think a lot of us have similar feelings about our own countries. Don't feel alone!  You're a good egg :)

Speaking of eggs. This Australian senator blamed the shootings on immigration and a daring 17 year old cracked an egg on his head... while trying to film it with his phone in a truly millennial fashion.  The senator then punched the minor. Like repeatedly. It looks like he hit the kid hard!

Spoiler for Hiden:
Thank you, JR, I know I'm not alone, but that was kind and comforting and appreciated. There are good people here and  all around the world who are tolerant, compassionate and balanced. But the tide is changing and there are not enough people left who actually remember and recognise the signs of facism and the danger of extreme nationalistic groups. So many have been have been warning for so long and it has been ignored. This may be a turning point in Australia at last because the battle cries from the public are calling out the press to stop letting  the racism and hatred pass and start calling it out. The Murdoch press won't even try because they  are complicit, but some of the others may get brave. This is where social media can actually make a difference now more people are aware of what has been going on.

Anyway I am happy to report Fraser Anning will be censured by both major parties next Plt. There has been a petition to sack him which has to date gathered 1,175,812 signatures which is a welcome sign of disapproval. Unfortunately under our law he has not misled parliament or committed a crime so cannot be sacked, but hopefully next election he will be kicked out. He only ever had 19 votes. Yes 19. But when someone in his party(Pauline Hanson One Nation party, racist to the core ) resigned he was the next up on their list and so got in as an accidental Senator. Then that party kicked him out, as he was too extreme even for them, and he is an Independent.

Yes Eli, the Senator is a full blown Nazi and so are all the six bodyguard thugs who piled on that young slight EggBoy. They held his arms, legs and body down under their weight and had him in a choke hold so long he momentarily lost consciousness until a couple of press photographers yelled at them to loosen up.  They call themselves Australian Patriots or something like, but have to keep changing their names because their reputations become known. They and their followers cause trouble at rallies etc and usually hide under masks but show off swastika tattoos. One has a warrant out in his home state for terrorising a church congregation by staging a fake beheading with others. This is how bad it has become.

Eggboy, Will Connolly, is a now a national hero and someone started a fund to cover any legal expenses he might have incurred. Fortunately the police said no charge and he was released fairly quickly, by which time there was $40,000 donated which he is sending to help the survivors of the NZ massacre.   BTW don't try and follow him on Twitter because there have been several copycats, so he is off for awhile.

This is a long post and I am sorry it is on such a grim subject. For that reason I have deliberately put it in spoiler so people don't accidentally read it on recent posts.

You are all champions FF and I am keeping a benign eye on you all, even though I cannot post very often.  :) :)

Today was a wonderful day when our schoolkids marched in tens of thousands to protest for action on Climate Change.  I went to watch and cheer them on in our city centre. Then came home and heard about Christchurch.

I wrote this on Page 2 of this Topic in 2015.

My personal reasons for keeping out of these discussions is that here in Oz we have lived through two toxic destructive years. There has been seriously alarming authoritarianism and uncertainty in a jingoistic atmosphere of fear mongering. Australia's humanity has been internationally shamed and we have been made to look ridiculous in so many ways.  It has been frightening and depressing for so many different categories of people who both deserve and need help.

Since then the culture has worsened. Our govt has ignored and tacitly encouraged, or even in some cases MP's and Senators have openly endorsed white fascist and racist groups. This has been aggravated and encouraged by the Murdoch media who have a stranglehold on our Liberal National Government and are poisonous.

Our Liberals are not like UK or US Liberals, they are Right Wing Tories with extreme elements in the Cabinet. In addition the PM is an evangelical Christian Preacher of the Prosperity Theology. ie you are only poor if you deserve it and if so it's your fault. They think coal is king and Science is questionable. Corruption is rife. There is so much more I could say but it would be a rant and it has no place here. I hope in May we will have new govt but it has been along hard depressing six years.

As a result one of leaders of the  murdering bastards is an Australian and we have let that loose on our decent, kind progressive Kiwi neighbours.

I am shaking with anger and crying with sorrow and deeply ashamed. I am so very sorry, that my country is largely to blame for this.

[JAN 2019] Air / Re: [Jan 2019] - AIR - Voting Thread

Voted. This seemed a more difficult subject to get to grips with this time. One was easy winner for me, but then five more so close, had to make hard choices for last two votes.

36 minutes to our midnight, Sending you all sincere good wishes for a happy, healthy New Year. There is hope here for 2019, an election sometime when we may get sanity and humanity back again is looking more  possible by the day.  This has made me very happy, but as ScarletBea mentioned my muscles are being annoying so I cannot ramble on here very often. Keep safe dear friends and thank you writers, having short stories as a monthly free gift is magical.  :) 8)

@ArhiX I love the idea of your Much Thinking furnace with the Master Chef Arhi who knows when they are just right. ;D
Good to see you around again.

Many of Shakespeare's works reflect the social history and customs of his time, and include satire of certain characters whether courtier or commoner. He had to tread carefully on political comment but was a master of humour as well as moral puzzles.

When Swift wrote Gulliver's Travels it was early fantasy satire of the political and social history of his time. It has survived in many forms and become a classic.

I have been reading and re-reading Discworld for years now and have genuinely come to  believe Sir Terry is our 20th century equivalent of those famous historical satirists and in the future, when the contemporary references are less familiar, students will study and enjoy his books, and discuss how it relates to our era, even if they need Sparknotes.

So, only one choice for me despite great respect for JRRT.

So sorry, Inks, my sympathy sent to you and your family.
