Will you be reading this one @JMack?

I’m in! I bought Ryan’s book a while back on Kindle, and now I can schedule it in.  :)

The breadth of the story is surprising me. With the initial chapters, I expected everything to stay focused on Vasya and that little corner of the world. Instead, most of the book has been in Moscow. It’s clear this is Vasya’s story, but hey there’s a whole trilogy coming. It had better have a broad canvas.

What do you think: is the stranger (Frost?) the same one who got Vasya away from the one-eyed man? I don’t think so, but am wondering. One of you wrote about the fey. Is that an assumption that these folk are fey, or in the book and I missed it? The blue gem - the stranger clearly wants to track Vasya, but for good or bad purposes?

I love the setting. I love that roads are far worse than frozen rivers, and that people sleep on top of the oven. Life was hard, folks. And still is in many places.

If I get 6 read this year, it will be amazing.

And there’s the love triangle between Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli, which is so sensitively captured in The Secret Diaries. Ah, jealousy. I’ll write more about this later...  8)

I’m quite happy to have a it more time to write my tardy story, since I’m, er, late with it. I have two stories started, and neither finished.

Congrats, @bdcharles. I voted for “Fuh”, too, and really enjoyed the unbridled feel of it. And LESION! What a horrible, wonderful name for a blade. I would love to read a true story structure around the concepts you created. So many questions! But maybe the Purple Mages just dont want them answered...

Only a few of us, but some striking prose.

Just figured out a charge from the “App Store” was a phishing email. JMackson shares our Apple account, but he didn’t buy the game. So... I played Sherlock for a few minutes and foiled their nefarious scheme!  >:(

Meanwhile, all else is good, if not, actually, pretty damn good. JMacksdotter is home, and JMackson with girlfriend on his way from Ohio. There’s a fire going, presents already under the tree, and I had a nice glass of spiked egg nog. Good, and getter even better.  ;D

Oh wow! @ScarletBea is 50!
And I just sent off your Christmas card  :(

I’m going to have to tell Mrs. JMack the date. It will never be forgotten again in the history of the world. (Her to-do lists breed like rabbits and conduct psychological warfare like mosquitoes. You can’t ignore them.)

Congrats, Bz!!!

Started “The Bear and the Nightingale”, getting a jump on the January book club.
Page 52. I have no idea where this is going or what the actual plot skeleton is.
I broke down and read a tiny bit of the back cover blurb, something I try not to do.

Enjoyable so far.

Arrived yesterday.
Lovely writing so far.
But the winter setting leaves me cold.  8)

I’ve just been to the gym. So where am I now?
The best bakery in 50 miles.

And I work for a diet company!  :o

So Mrs. JMack wants two things for Christmas. One is a new CD player for her car. Believe it or not, this would cost me over $500. Can’t quite bring myself to that one. (I wonder why?)

The other is to sing her Keith Urbana’s new song, I’ll Be Your Santa Tonight.

I bought the mp3, and downloaded software that let almost fully drop out Keith, leaving a sort of karaoke track. I loaded it up in GarageBand, plugged in my Yeti microphone, and...

I’ve lost my voice.

I have a developing cold, for one thing, plus I tried to sing tenor for the Hallelujah Chorus at a party Sunday night and sort of blew out my chords. Should have stuck to bass. Now I only have bass, and no control over my tone.

How many days til Christmas?  :-\

Except when you have to work... :-\

In my area we have really strong winds today, and then rain which comes horizontally! I'm supposed to go out for lunch with a friend and we normally walk to Subway, but I was telling him he might be driving today, hehe

Shouldn’t it be called Underground in the UK?

I’m happy that I am a writer, though I have yet to write a novel.  What’s stopping me is both time and confidence.

Time is a matter of having truly higher priorities: mostly, spending time with Mrs. JMack and, also, earning a living. I have a time-consuming job and commute. I enjoy it, and I’m paid well.

Confidence is trickier to understand. I can write a 1,500 or 5,000 word short story, and give myself permission for it not be perfect. I’m writing with the time I’m willing to give it, so I accept the limitations. But a novel? It needs to be better and hang together in ways my short stories don’t have to.

I do keep saying “one day”, and usually follow that with “when I retire.” The reality is that I’m happy writing, but I don’t have to write to be happy.
