I don't really have any goals this year beyond maybe hopefully getting into the double digits.  Its a far cry from a few years ago when I was doing 50ish a year but I'm also not spending 10-12 hours a week in airplanes or airports which was when I did a lot of my reading.  I do think I might start trying more Audible stuff, I just worry that I will tune out and miss half the book.

:( my work computer never shows the pics you post, I'll have to wait until this evening to see...
I'm sure it will be lovely.

I woke up today to a light flurry covering everything, so pretty.

But then I realised I was complianing about a little bit when our american friends are being *really* cold! How are you faring, @JMack, @Hedin , who else is on the North East area?

But I really feel for folks in our Midwest, like Chicago, where temp with wind chill was -40 Fahrenheit and crazy stuff like.

Midwest here and it was cold.  Our high in Indianapolis on Wednesday was -1F and the wind chill was in the -35 to -40F range.  Yesterday was marginally better, we actually got up to 15F with only a -10F wind chill.  I have friends in Chicago who said they were having -60F wind chills.  Luckily for me on Wednesday my youngest daughter was sick so I just stayed home all day and didn't have to go outside at all.  Also woke up to snow this morning which made the commute fun.

Monday is supposed to get up to 60 degrees.  Living in the midwest is confusing.

Also started playing in an online D&D game (I got really into D&D last year) which has been fun.

How? Where? How?  Where?

Do you use roll20?  Are they people you knew already or met online?  I NEED TO KNOW.

Yep using Roll20 with video chat on Discord, the Roll20 video chat always gave us issues when we tried.  I found a group in r/LFG, it actually took me awhile to find something because I couldn't play until 9pm EST and most games started earlier than that (I found a few hosted by a West Coast GM that started at 6pm PST which would have matched up nicely but they were all planning for 4 hour sessions which would be way too late for me). We have 5 in our party, two of the guys I play off of well but not a fan of the play style of the other two but still having fun with it.  I want to get into an in person live game but beyond a game store locally that does things once a month I haven't had any success finding something around me.

Yay! Did you manage to not be blocked, then? I did all I could with the IP bans thing, but nothing really happened...
How have you been?

No issues yet but usually seemed to work the first time I logged in at work (at home right now) and then got screwy so we will see what happens tomorrow.

Things have been hectic here but good. Had some bad times the past six months with some family deaths but we have hopefully put all of that behind us for awhile. I made the idiotic decision recently to wake up at 5am to workout before work which means that I am going to bed earlier which means almost no time for hobbies. Been in a bit of a video game kick with my limited free time but haven't been reading much, at this point I have kinda lost track of what has come out in the last 18 months or so. Also started playing in an online D&D game (I got really into D&D last year) which has been fun.

The girls are doing great. The oldest just lost her second tooth which made the Tooth Fairy make an emergency run to the grocery store to get cash back from buying gum since they don't carry cash anymore. The youngest is trying to prove that since she is two she doesn't need to listen to us anymore but her hysterics are so funny and cute it's really hard to keep the Dad face on with her.

Fantasy Book & Author Discussion / Re: Abebooks top 50 Fantasy Book List
« on: September 05, 2018, 03:09:45 AM »
12 for me. I did notice a trend that the list tended to go with more older books than more "modern" ones and most of the older ones I haven't touched. But also Eragon? Really?

I’m sure F-F will do a list.

Could have made it a book battle...

Edit: Actually I am thinking of an idea how to do this but not as a book battle. I still have the records of all of the nominations we did for both series and standalones. Might need to get some updated recs because it's been a few years but I think I have enough info to make a ballot of sorts.

Books by far. I actually can't think of any movie that I thought was better than any book it was based off of.

Also, the movies end at Deathly Hallows Part 2, there are no prequels movies or sequel plays in my personal HP canon.

The entire Divine Cities trilogy is on sale for $2.99 (Kindle version). You should get this if you haven't already.

I never look at maps, if they wanted to save a few pieces of paper and time and omitted them I would not complain.

I have been summoned! I think we received nominations for secondary characters but I never got around to putting that together. My intention was to take all of the finalists for the character battles and have a contest for Best Character.

Other ideas I had before was that everyone would submit their favorite book cover (no special editions) and we would have a battle with that. Also toyed with the idea of favorite book period regardless if it's standalone or part of a series.

Congrats! Things get a little crazier with two kids but it will be fun for you watching them interact with each other.

I don't know about ending, since the last book isn't published yet, but book 4 of Brent Weeks' Lightbringer series had me gritting my teeth and screaming that a certain twist that happened isn't compatible with what and how he wrote in books 1, 2 and 3 >:( >:(

Seriously, after Book 4 I really have no desire to finish the series.

Among completed series (so no ASOIAF) Fraser is probably it for me. I really liked the first two books but the last was just bad for me. I pretty much spent the last half of that book wondering why I was reading it, if I hadn't already read the first two it would have been a DNF.

Fantasy Book & Author Discussion / Re: Book Series Recommendation?

It is always useful to check out the Book Battles that @Hedin set up for us, hard to believe it was 2015.(Hi there Hedin, hope you are fine  ;D

Some of our choices there may seem dated and you may have read most by now, but often worth a quick check for one you haven't read.
The fact they were nominated shows they were popular and we certainly didn't hold back. Here is the
Series Battle

Hey the summons seems to have broken the work IP ban!  Or maybe it was opening the page up in Chrome rather than Firefox.

Between SK's listed options I would recommend First Law over Riryia and Abercrombie's standalone books in the world are even better (you don't need to read the trilogy to get into those but it does help).  With Sanderson as a guide here is what I would also recommend (in no particular order):

Greatcoats - Sebastien de Castell
Shadow Campaigns - Django Wexler
Powder Mage - Brian McClellan

I was just browsing around things yesterday and I discovered that last fall Erikson let it be known that third book in the Kharkanas series has been put on hold (sounds like the sales of the first two were really bad) and that he's now actively working on the first book of the Karsa trilogy.  As someone who had a hard time getting into the Kharkansas stuff (FoD was ok but was a bit of a struggle and FoL so far as been a DNF for me) I can see why they would be stopped for a bit but I'm sure its disappointing to those who liked those books not to get them finished up.

I just spent 15 minutes trying to figure out why a podcast that usually comes out on Thursday night and that I listen to every Friday morning wasn't up for me to listen to.  Today is apparently Thursday and not Friday.  It also feels like it should be lunch time rather than lunch time in two hours.  This could be a long day.
