The writing contest is having a little bump but how can we make the forum as a whole more active?

http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/monthly-writing-contest/what-to-do-about-the-writing-contest/msg202664/#new

I like to see more links to the forum  from the home website and  the F-F Facebook group.

Is the F-F Twitter still going?

Dragons should be powerful, intelligent, scary, cunning yet whenever a hero comes along there go down quicker than a goblin.

Can you think of a memorable dragons only ones I can think of are from the Hobbit and Dragonlance.

No self respecting dragon should be involved in  a romantic sub plot either we’ve had  enough of that with vampires and werewolves.

Don’t let humans use you like a glorified horse  either.

Fantasy Book & Author Discussion / What did you read in January 2020

Here it is: The what did you read this past month thread.

Come share your list and what you thought of the books you read last month. We're not looking for full out reviews, just a brief couple of sentences that sum up your impressions.

This is also not a contest for who read the most books, I know some of us struggle to find time to read one book a month, and others manage a dozen. That doesn't matter, so don't feel reluctant to post if you have read less books (or way more books) than others. This is all for sharing, and if you read anything, come let us know what it was and what you thought of it.

Time for a book about Necromancers in space as it will be my last pick for the club or maybe I be back as Emperor of the book club for May. We  will see how the voting goes  ;)

Gideon the Ninth is the most fun you'll ever have with a skeleton.

The Emperor needs necromancers.

The Ninth Necromancer needs a swordswoman.

Gideon has a sword, some dirty magazines, and no more time for undead bullshit.

Tamsyn Muir's Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap off the page, as skillfully animated as necromantic skeletons. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy.

Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse. She packs up her sword, her shoes, and her dirty magazines, and prepares to launch her daring escape. But her childhood nemesis won't set her free without a service.

Harrowhark Nonagesimus, Reverend Daughter of the Ninth House and bone witch extraordinaire, has been summoned into action. The Emperor has invited the heirs to each of his loyal Houses to a deadly trial of wits and skill. If Harrowhark succeeds she will become an immortal, all-powerful servant of the Resurrection, but no necromancer can ascend without their cavalier. Without Gideon's sword, Harrow will fail, and the Ninth House will die.

Of course, some things are better left dead.

Fantasy Book & Author Discussion / Priest of Bones by Peter McLean

I’m really enjoying this one , quite a small novel.

It’s a cross between low town/black company and Peaky Blinders.

[/Sixty-five thousand battle-shocked, trained killers came home to no jobs, no food and the plague. What did Her Majesty think was going to happen?'

Tomas Piety takes his duties seriously: as a soldier, as a priest of Our Lady of Eternal Sorrows and as a leader of men. He has come home from the war to reclaim his family business, to provide for his men and to ensure the horrors of Abingon can never happen in Ellinburg.

But things have changed: his crime empire has been stolen and the people of Ellinburg - his people - have run out of food and hope and places to hide. With his best friend Bloody Anne, his war-damaged brother Jochan and his new gang, the Pious Men, Tomas sets out to reclaim what was his.

And as Tomas is dragged into a web of political intrigue by the sinister Queen's Men, forced to work against the foreign infiltrators lurking in the backstreet taverns, brothels and gambling dens of the Stink, one thing becomes clear.

Writers' Corner / Would you use the word Jackass in a medieval setting?
« on: December 31, 2019, 06:40:27 AM »
Too me the word sounds too American and I don’t know anyone in today’s Britain that would ever use this phrase.

Would it have been used by British folks in the past as an insult?

What word do you think would be a substitute for Jackass , would you go for fool?
