Happy Birthday @Nighteyes! I might be late, but I brought (another) cake

Looks like I also missed @Overlord's birthday., so another Happy (late) Birthday:

Also Eli, I'm not sure if it's still the same, but back in the days when I was in GR, anyone with more than x books (100? 200? can't remember) could become a 'librarian', and able to do those things.
Maybe someone from FF could help... @Arry?

I am not sure what the criteria is/was, but there's an application that you can submit to become a librarian. I do have librarian status and can edit books if you want me to take a look @Eli_Freysson (just give me a link and let me know what needs doing). No guarantees, but I can see what I can do

Have a look on the FF Twitter for the context. Luckily I've always hated Facebook before it was cool to do so. :D

The context is that James Bennet purposefully started a topic looking for Queer author recommendations, which could have been a really good topic, but he started it with the intention of creating a fire and was very antognistic in his replies to people. His entire attitude was to attack rather than to be encouraging. And a shitstorm ensued for hours and hours. (and before people think he is being unfairly accused here, he even posted on his wall that he started the fire on purpose)

Oh, and Happy New Year everyone! And best wishes for a year full of wonderful new reads!

Sorry, I didn't mean to 'attack' her - as I said, i only know her from here. It was just my immediate reaction,

I didn’t take it as an attack, just an honest reaction. And I mentioned Tough Traveling mainly because I participated for a couple of years before it was hosted on FF, and so never really associated it strongly with FF because of that.

Seems a bit under-handed, to be honest... :-\
So she, as far as I know, 'raises to fame' through Fantasy Faction, and then goes and sets up a competing site? Even moving some of the regular FF features (the Tough Travel thing - I read it was going to 'fantasy hive' but I didn't know what that was)?
I'll stay here.

Well, Tough Traveling was not a Fantasy Faction original, it was another bloggers meme that ran for a while, died out, was resurrected with the main post being hosted on Fantasy Faction.

Then I procrastinated by reading wikipedia articles about the decline of polytheism in Rome, religious history of Britian and the history of invasions at that time in the UK, which somehow led me to "sacred marriage" rites which basically meant having sex as part of a coronation, or in some places ritual sex each year as part of a festival.  Oh and I read about the Inquisition for a bit which lasted way longer than I imagined and interestingly was driven largely by the Dominican Order (in places against the Franciscans, my fav. Order). Another note, I don't buy that Constantine's conversion was purely political b/c Christianity was hierarchical and popular among the poor... esp that it ultimately required a huge network of long-standing rituals that legitimated the state and took 300 more years of violent repression against polytheists to eradicate them-- it just seems like a lot of effort, so there must be some elements that are missing from this story.

I'm not a huge proponent of Constantine, but wouldn't it be possible for him to convert because he just... Believed it? Bought into it? Was tricked into it? Whichever phrase makes people more comfortable.

I'm not saying that's what happened, I'm just saying that we shouldn't rule out the possibility just because he's a significant historical and political figure.

From what I have learned about Constantine I don't buy his initial conversion.  It may be very well possible and likely that later in life he fully converted but when he first came to power it seems to me like he used Christianity as a power base rather than being a true believer.

Just a friendly reminder that if there’s more to say here, to move it to the politics thread

@Arry (and any other American book blogger) is this of interest?

Thanks! I’m actually not reading this series, but appreciate the link, maybe someone else here will be interested :)

What do you mean The Core is nearly out? We've had it on a table in the shop for days now. You should have told me you were waiting for it. Since I have it for half price here, it would have covered the shipping price easily and you'd have it already.
Okay, it's out since September 28th, you're right. Maybe I mixed it up with another book I'm waiting for that's due in October? Could be Deadhouse Landing by Esslemont.
I'm not in a hurry to get it since Daylight War and Skull Throne are both doorstoopers but half price sounds nice. How much is half price?  ;)

Maybe you saw the US release date at some point? (it released October 3rd here)

I'm currently getting in the mood for October by reading Strange Weather by Joe Hill (new book, releases late this month)

Also reading Guns Above, not perfect, but over all it seems to be a fun steampunk, airship book.

Okay... uh... that wound up being 1247 downloads yesterday.

This is nuts.

@Eli_Freysson where do I find the ink to your announcement on r/fantasy?

https://www.reddit.com/r/Fantasy/comments/6zlhhg/hey_folks_my_book_the_call_is_available_for_free/
Awesome. I've considered extending myself to reddit. But most of my experiences there have been negative. Naturally, each subreddit has its own culture, so I may just have been unlucky.

I'm curious what subreddit(s) you've had a negative experience with? I may be biased, but r/fantasy works to keep things more positive and definitely has a different atmosphere than other places you may find. Each subreddit has its own rules and r/fantasy's #1 is Be Kind. That said, being involved as part of the community will always increase interest in any self promo you do (which will be the case anywhere. People like to support their own )

@Jmack you might want to put some spoiler tags around those Powder Mage details. Maybe it's not huge, but probably more than I'd prefer to see before reading.

I'm currently reading The Salt Line by Holly Goddard Jones, really enjoying it. It features killer ticks, and a range of interesting characters. And the ticks are very well done, not a over the top campy type of book at all.

Great idea! @xiagan or @ Arry, can you please move all these posts into a new thread? Thanks!

Done: http://fantasy-faction.com/forum/index.php?topic=10923.msg176310#msg176310

Some posts I left here if they also mentioned what they were reading, particularly if they were quoted in another reply that I moved to the new thread. Sorry if any wound up in the wrong place. Not on a computer, so the interface is even wonkier, may have missed some
