I'm shooting for 33 reads this year. Last year, I read 50 books, which I just barely made, so I'm scaling back a bit to make it easier to ht my goal. Why set myself up for failure? :-)

I don't have any particular books in mind, though I would like to pick up some new authors this year.

I guess. But looking at this giant thread, I think posting on its a waste of time. I'll see what happens but I can't imagine anyone would scroll through this. I wouldn't.

Agreed. I don't think I've gotten any reviews from my earlier post(s). Sometimes the ROI is so low it just isn't worth the effort.

Killing the Dead, the second Assassin Without a Name story, is currently ranked #1 in the SF/F Kindle Short Read category and free on Amazon until 9/8.

Give it a download, read it, review it, and check back here this time next week when the 3rd story, Night of Zealotry, comes up for free also.

The Goddard Affair (A Tale of the Assassin Without a Name #4) is officially released!

Here's the cover, blurb, and a few links.

The Assassin Without a Name is on the hunt, looking for the secret organizations which recently tried to kill him before they can try again. But the work of his trade doesn't stop just because of personal business, so when a new client named Walter Goddard comes around wishing to have a rival eliminated, the Assassin Without a Name takes the job.

Only after the task is complete does he learn that Walter Goddard is a member of the Society for the Progression of Science and Technology, one of the very same organizations he's been seeking. At one of the society’s premiere technology galas, the Assassin Without a Name meets Gwendolyn Morgan, a beautiful widow who has run into problems of her own with the society. Not only does she believe the organization hired an assassin to murder her husband, but she’s certain she’s next. Convincing himself he’s only helping Gwendolyn in exchange for the society’s darkest secrets and not because of his part in making the woman into a widow, the Assassin Without a Name finds himself in the unusual role of protector as the society dispatches their Black Guard watchdogs to kill them both.

Sleepy Hollow gets a 2nd season renewal after a couple of episodes!

Huh. I hadn't heard that yet, but great to know it has some staying power. I love the melding of American history with dark supernatural plot lines. Good stuff.

I'll keep watching, or course, but it's already starting to feel like I'm doing so out of a sense of obligation rather than excitement. I'm still hopeful this will be a blip, and the series will get back on track next time.

I feel the same way. The show has entered into a downward slide, IMO. Where Sleepy Hollow just up'ed their game in the latest (3rd?) episode and Arrow came back with some big changes all around, Agents has really flat-lined for me. There just isn't anything interesting there, no edginess, no suspense, and a bunch of cut-out characters. They need some over-arching intrigue and they need it now.

Liking the show a lot. I didn't really have high hopes for it but I am very pleasantly surprised by how well it is going. I must be the odd one out in preferring the first episode, can't stand that whole something happening then "19 hours earlier" as a plot device. They should have just dropped that opening scene it just seemed really unnecessary to me.

I HATE that plot device. As soon as I realized what was happening I looked at my wife and said, "They're not going to do one of those 12 hours earlier things, are they? It's only episode 2!"

Sure enough...

I liked the first episode better than the second. I do hope they're going to pick it up in the next one. I guess they're keeping it tame to appeal to a wider audience.

Interesting that the current frontrunner is "with ppl in real life".
I'm lucky in that my wife and one of my best friends enjoy fantasy and we often read the same books.

Same here... almost. My wife is more into sci-fi, where I'm pretty much 100% fantasy. I'll pass on anything I think she'll enjoy, though.

Writers' Corner / Re: I Have A Character, But No Plot

This happens to me sometimes. I would suggest building up the character's "world"--friends, family, relationships, where they live, past encounters/experiences which may have shaped their lives. Surely something will come out of that to get you going.

I also prefer outlining before writing anything. It's not the approach everyone takes, but it works best for me.

I'm finally getting around to watching the first movie this weekend. I'm going in with low expectations as far as it being anything like the book. I just hope it's not needlessly drawn out like King Kong.

I like the show so far. I do think they need to up the tension a bit and bring in some bigger enemies. There's gotta be other groups out there interested in acquiring the tech for more nefarious purposes.
