Fantasy-Faction's 2013 Anthology / Re: Winners Announced!
« on: December 06, 2012, 03:45:14 AM »
First, as the others have already stated, a hearty congratulations to those who made the final cut.  Though I missed the final 6 mark, the fact I hit the top 30 is something I take as an honor.  This whole contest has been surreal.  I didn't make it into the final 6. The bad is obvious - I didn't send the story in to come away not making the final cut. The good is there though as well. This story made it in the top 30 out of 1700 entrants. The book is a British publication, and I cannot express how important it is that I impressed a group of readers out of the USA, especially since they were considering it alongside 6 well-established authors.

The question now is - what do I do with it? My short answer is - It's not done. Though the story was conceived haphazardly, it was also one that continued to grow as I considered its possibilities. My hope? You'll see this one again!

Now, with all that said, thanks for a great idea and wonderful opportunity.  I do have one question - given the book is delayed, are we still able to preorder a copy?  I delayed doing so because... well, I wasn't sure if I'd need one or lots more (cause you know I would've been hit up by my family for a copy of the book).  With that settled, I'm ready to make my order!

Fantasy Art / Fan Art / Re: Illustrating Your Works

I have several of my characters illustrated throughout my website.  It also has a map and some other cool stuff (short stories, etc.)  Honestly, I spent WAY too much time on this part, but it was a holdover from my comic writing days and I just couldn't resist!

Writers' Corner / Re: Creating Suspense/Horror/Terror
« on: October 21, 2012, 04:06:05 AM »
I can't say I've ever been terrified by a book, not in the same way as a movie.  The nearest I recall wasn't even a "horror" movie, but was about this young man that was involved w/ a terrorist cell planning to detonate a bomb (attached to him) on a subway in NYC.  It floated from his POV, his ex-girlfriends, his mothers, and maybe a policeman.  It was disturbing at the end, mostly because it never showed you what happened, only the bomber walking into the tunnel and looking at the people.  I remember getting to the end and going - "WHA-!!!!"

It just ended.

But fear?  Like, for monsters and stuff?  Nope.  Anyone w/ suggestions? (Books, not movies, as I'm certain trying tactics from a movie to "write scary" simply doesn't work - of course, I invite you to prove me wrong.)

GURPS, 'nuff said :)

I had GURPS, but I found it hard to manipulate - probably because I was a kid trying to handle a multiverse system.

It's been a long time since I played anything.  The last thing I bought was Marvel's SAGA rule system.  I loved the feel of it, the way that you could play 1 on 1 and really get the character into what they were seeing.  It didn't work as well w/ a group though, and tended to be odd at certain times in the game (handling damage was odd from what I recall).  But I definitely loved the storytelling style and how it seemed rules-lite, making it easier to focus on a story than a simulation.

That was my biggest beef w/ most RPGs - last time I played D&D (or Champions), it played like a video game - no RP elements, just hack, get some treasure, increase in levels, buy better stuff.  I probably was just w/ the wrong group (and even when I went to Origins, I gave it a shot), but that turned me totally off to these games.

Prior to that, I had a bevy of Super Hero games - FASERIP, DC (the Mayfair one)... Twilight 2000.  Probably a few others, but FASERIP was the only one I played regularly because I knew the Marvel world better than DC (at the time).

Fantasy-Faction's 2013 Anthology / Re: Short List Announced!
« on: October 07, 2012, 02:13:39 AM »
I was so stunned to see my name on part 3! (Still shaking slightly!) Congratulations to everyone on the shortlist (it will be even more nail biting waiting to see the final list now!) and well done to everyone for participating!

Thank you to the organisers for setting up the whole event and for choosing to add lists daily like this so as to keep us glued to our seats - the top 30 has seriously made my day (week, month, year even!) and given me a confidence boost that someone out there actually enjoyed reading what I enjoyed writing.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for everyone for the next three parts of the shortlist! x

It is one of the more surreal moments to realize that a publisher, editor, agent (or anyone who reads a ton of stories) likes something you wrote.  Congrats!

First, loving the cover.  It was not even close to what I expected, which is always a good thing.  If I question a bit about it, I'm pretty certain someone passing by it may as well, and isn't that what a covers supposed to do?

What about a story for those characters?  I could see several options - one already mentioned where the silent dragon is hunting the dragonhunter.  For me, I didn't take it that way cause... well, Dragons like that would probably have to be noisy.  So if it's not hunting the guy, then what is it doing and why is the hunter so nonchalant about the Dragon being there?

Questions - it's what makes good stories into great ones!

Story is already written ;)

I'm assuming it is already in the anthology???

Like others, I found this site through the anthology when it was posted to sffworld.com . I troll there, so I'll probably do the same here and try to jump in when I can.

Introductions / Re: Say Hi, I'm new thread
« on: October 06, 2012, 03:41:05 AM »
I'm new here, but not to sf/f forums, specifically the sffworld.com which I've been reading for... a long time now.  I would post to its forums occasionally, but I tend to wait until I have something to say (or I think I can be clever which happens even less often).  I live in the United States and have done a good deal of writing - completing 2 novels that I've never quite been happy with and more than a few short stories.  Instead of Christmas cards, I give out short stories that fit on something the size of a card.  I was going to stop that this year (it's hard to work w/in such a theme for... 12+ short stories now).  I told some people.  They yelled at me so I guess I will do another one.

As a youth, my favorite book was Dragonlance and a character I remembered fondly was Raistlin.  Recently, I tried to re-read that classic Weis/Hickman work, and much like the Superfriends... I should've left it in my memories.  Anyway, I swerved from typical fantasy to comics in my teens and then did some indy work as a writer before being tied into fantasy again during DB Pros run to adapt fantasy novels into comics.  I was tagged to do a project or two, but each time something happened and it never panned out.  That was the bad.  The good?  I realized how much I enjoyed fantasy and began trying my hand at writing prose as opposed to comics.  It also allowed me to meet some neat people that I'll never forget.

I have a wife of 18 years, son who is nearly 12, 2 cats, and a chocolate lab that keeps me young.

And that should about do it for the short form.  I'll try to be around.  Don't be a stranger either!
