I haven't read all of Cryptonomicon yet, but the parts I have read were really good.

My husband did read all of it and he loves it.  Still references it, even though he finished it months ago.

Self Publishing Discussion / Good freelance editors?

Any recommendations?

(I'm looking for someone to copy edit/proof my ms. but other specialties are welcome.  Maybe this thread could become a list of sorts.)

I don't know how helpful this will be but...

GIMP is one I hear a lot of good things about.  I have it on my computer and tried it out.  My experience is that the learning curve was steep but I still play around with it now and then.

For both my covers, I used Paint.NET and downloaded some free plug-ins available on their forum (it's an open source project).  I found it to be much more user-friendly than GIMP with some nice potential.  The two covers I made with it are on my Smashwords page, if you want to take a look.  Master of Roads was the first one I made and I like it less than Loki's cover.  I'm eventually going to re-do it.

I would recommend using a picture of some sort on your cover.  All-text is, if I remember correctly, more of a thriller thing than fantasy.  Of course, if that's what you're going for, forget what I said.  :)

If cost is a concern, Flickr has photos you can use under the Creative Commons license.  Those labeled "Attribution-only" are the ones to look for.  Look for a really good one that fits your purpose, contact the person who took it, tell them what you want it for and ask if you can use it.  You'll need to give credit in the book (the attribution part of the license), but otherwise it's free.

I've always loved fantasy, especially anything that has to do with mythology.  Unless it doesn't have romance.  I really love a fantasy story with a good romance in it as well.  There are exceptions, of course.  LOTR, for example (unless you count the movies).  Found this place through Twitter and liked what I read.  Decided to stay and put my dirty feet on the couch join in where I could.

Fantasy Movies, Comic Books & Video Games / Re: The Avengers

I thought for sure The Avengers would be a failed bit.  I've seen it twice now and I'm still amazed at how good the writing is.

Oh, and the actors.  They're good, too.   ;)

A few favorite scenes:

Spoiler for Hiden:
*Definitely Hulk and Loki.  That was fantastic.

*Loki and the Chitauri (flashback).

*Coulson and Loki was my absolute fave, though, with my favorite line:  "You lack conviction." (I really hope I remembered that, right.)

Absolute genius.
