Fantasy Book & Author Discussion / Anthony Ryan new series announced!
« on: August 03, 2018, 09:04:02 PM »
Got an email that Anthony Ryan announced a new dual series set in the world of Vaelin Al Sorna. The first book will be published Summer 2019

This is one of my all time favorite series. I havent read his YA series yet, but not too interested. Any ideas when and/or if he will write another series in the Greatcoats world?

I don't get how people didn't like Wise Man's Fear.  I tore right through that book.  Couldn't put it down until I finished it.  I don't care if the story didn't progress much and if Kvothe was getting laid all the time or if he's the most lying boastful jackass in all the realms of fantasy.  I thought it was fun and I enjoy the author's style.

I liked the first half. Then the sex fairie came in. Spoiled it all.

It was god awful, way worse than TNOTW, which I didn't think was possible. CNF

CR- The Iron Heel, Low Town, Imajica, The Republic of Thieves, and God Bless you, Mr. Rosewater.

Wow my reading isn't usually this erratic. Been a slow reading month, got bored quickly.

Reading The Martian Chronicles and In Cold Blood currently.

Mixed feelings about the Chronicles and In Cold Blood hasn't had the effect people say it has, Im a 3rd of the way through.

Fantasy Book & Author Discussion / Re: Tolkien Ripoffs?

I'd say Thomas Covenant has much Tolkien-esque familiarity to it, althought I've only read the first, and besides not giving any fucks about what happens to Thomas, it was quite boring. That and the going back to the real world really lost me. Everyone always complains about the rape, but it fit, and that's not what bothered me about Book 1. Just couldn't care about anything that happened to anybody.

I didn't know Chris Brown was an author? crazy..

It's Pierce Brown..Big fan but don't know the author?

Kraken by China Mieville, I just couldn't get into that one.  Before that, I very nearly abandonned In the Name of the Wind cos Rothfuss' pacing wore me down a bit.

Oh yeah, I struggled with that one. I've picked up the Peridio Street Station (spelling) book though, as Porno said that might be a better place to start *shrugs*

I plan on finishing Kraken but I see what you mean, random chapters that make no sense and lack of adequate plot progression.

I couldnt finish The Warded Man, although I eventually went back and finished it, it bored me to death, as did The Name of the Wind.

Book that I put down at least 4 times was Gene Wolfs Book of the New Sun.

Have to be The Hobbit. Probably read 7 or 8 times.

Thought The Warded man was shit, but I eventually finished it. The Goblin Emperor was absolutely terrible, couldn't finish. TNOTW, terrible plot, been done hundreds of times, weak characterization, no worldbuilding. Prose was good, but that's it.

One book that I and many others loved, but also many others have hated, is Mark Lawrence's Prince of Thorns. That seems to be controversial.

This may be just as true for other authors. Jezebel for example is utterly determined to take offense with Pat Ruthkiss. It's readership seemingly less so from the comments. He is upsetting to some feminists and makes no apology for it so fault is constantly looked for.

Jezebel? I for one detest all of Rothfuss's work and think it unoriginal drivel with no plot.

A lot of post-modern feminists find issue with books that they have never read, ala prince of thorns.

The Goblin Emperor. Absolutely atrocious, no idea how met such acclaim. Can't find one good thing to say about it.

The Mirror Empire, TNOTW, The Warded Man should fall under this category but I actually finished all of them, and continue to regret it.

I would chose something with strong writing and believable characters, given that I would not choose the warded man, I begrudgingly finished it, but nothing kept me interested. That coupled with the sub par writing, it didn't do anything for me. I know I am in the minority but if i read that as a first foray into fantasy I would stop there.

The Blade Itself or Best Served Cold

Recently finished Unwrapped Sky, definitely belongs in the new weird. Didn't give me much motivation to keep reading it but I did, and probably won't pick up the sequel. I would advise to never read the Long Price Quartet as literally NOTHING happens. The writing is good, but nothing happens for two books. Definitely won't pick up the remainder. I've heard better things about the Dagger and the Coin, may try that in the future.

Read The Warded Man, and had to keep going back to it as I just couldn't finish. The concept was cool, but the writing was amateur and I couldn't empathize with any of the characters.

Of all those I recommend Anthony Ryan.
