General Discussion / An animated short

I came across this animated short called The Lighthouse by Simon Scheiber.
I enjoyed it, thought some here might as well.

Read Alongs / The Hobbit
« on: November 04, 2016, 07:37:30 PM »
I was asked about Tolkien and admitted that I had never read any. @Tanniel and @Gem_Cutter both suggested starting with The Hobbit. I happened to check in a copy earlier today and figured I would give it a read. @Tanniel was curious about what it’s like reading Tolkien after being introduced to fantasy instead of Tolkien being the step off point. Robin Hobb was my introduction.
I am going to start reading this weekend and invite anyone to read or reread with me and share your thoughts.

:) I am new to the forum, and longtime lurker on Fantasy Faction. The October short story contest theme produced an idea and I actually wrote it. I tend to come up with scenes or plot bits for stories, but slack in making myself write.

In fifth grade we had a career program where we did different things, one was an author. We had to write a story with no prompts. We had free rein. I wrote about a kidnapped little kid and forced to live in a haunted house. The power to make anything happen thrilled me.

The next year we moved to a tiny coal mining town in West Virginia. The library was a tiny one room building with one librarian. She knew what the patrons read and would recommend items. For me she picked Silence of the Lambs. It was way over my head at that age but it was awesome that my mom allowed it.

Now I live in Florida. I hate the heat and humidity of summer. I work in a library (no library sciences degree). I enjoy having an idea of what our patrons read and recommending something for them. Especially when they love it.

I also love to paint and make things. I do craft class for adults and a youth art enrichment class for homeschooled kids each once a month at the library.

Robin Hobb’s Assassin's Apprentice was my introduction to fantasy novels. Hooked ever since. I don’t mind the meandering of some of her books. When I find an author/series I enjoy I want to spend all my time in their worlds. I have a love/hate thing with endings. Excited to see how it turns out and sad it is over. One of my favorite things in the world is discovering a completed series that I can read one after another.

Some series/authors I like: Robin Hobb, Sharing Knife series by Lois McMaster Bujold, Vamped by David Sosnowski, Twelve Houses series by Sharon Shinn,Brent Weeks, Brandon Sanderson, Joe Abercrombie, Peter V. Brett, Vlad Taltos series by Steven Brust, some Orson Scott Card, Harry Potter, Broken Earth series by N. K. Jemisin, Game of Thrones

Some shows/movies I like: Game of Thrones, Walking Dead (currently annoyed with it), Stranger Things, Breaking Bad, Black Sails, Togetherness, Labyrinth, Fight Club, Let the Right One In, Princess Bride, Big Fish, Moon, Children of Men, Ex Machina, Shawshank Redemption, House of Cards, Silver Linings Playbooks

So many things to do, write, read, watch so little time.
