Fantasy Book & Author Discussion / Charlie Human
« on: July 30, 2013, 09:55:51 AM »
Mr Human is a South African author, whose first book, Apocalypse Now Now, was published about a week ago.

It's a well done twisted tale loosely based on south african history with extra weirdness and magic thrown in. I just finished it and it was damn good. Give him a bash, you won't be sorry!

Fantasy Book & Author Discussion / Nick Harkaway

I've read and enjoyed The Gone Away World immensely, and I'm busy tearing through Angelmaker as this moment. He's funny, crazy and zany. Definitely deserves more attention than he's getting.

I know he does not write traditional or strictly urban fantasy, but his stuff is certainly weird enough to deserve a look. He's one of the few writers who can make me laugh out loud.

I only wish he had more than two books out!

Fantasy Book & Author Discussion / Blake Charlton
« on: September 05, 2011, 02:23:07 PM »
I had some time (12 hour flight over the Indian Ocean) to get some serious reading done, and I picked up Spellwright of Blake Charlton, because I've heard decent things about it and the cover is bloody pretty.

As a writer who suffered from dyslexia for a large part of his life,  he sounds very interesting. The book is pretty brilliant as well. Very magic system heavy, but the magic system he thought up is pretty cool.

General Discussion / What to do in Brisbane
« on: August 16, 2011, 03:32:01 PM »
Hopefully someone on here can give me a few good tips for Brisbane. My wife and I are visiting Brisbane at the end of this month, and since she'll be working for 3 of the mornings that we are there, I find myself with some time on my hands. Does anyone know of any good bookshops in the city? Or anything else that's fun that I can do to waste a few hours that won't cost a arm and a leg?
