I know, your suppose to list the genre, but how specific should you be? Is just calling it fantasy enough, or should I  get into subgenres (heroic fantasy, epic fantasy etc.) ?

Writers' Corner / The state of modern fantasy book covers.
« on: October 26, 2017, 02:48:32 PM »
I wasn’t sure whether post this on the writing board or the art board since it crosses over into both topic, but anyway.

Does anyone else kind of hate the minamalist design sense that is so common in fantasy book covers these days? I kind of hate modern fantasy cover art. A lot of times I feel they fail to give me that sense of wonder, that more classical covers did. More often then not it’s either a model in cosplay (presumably, depicting the protagonist, but I’ve seen covers where the character on the cover scarcely resembles the protagonist in the book.) or a logo or insignia, which doesn’t say much out of context. But worst of all, are generic illustrations of unicorns or dragons. I like the covers of Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series, because the tell you exactly what kind of story you’re about to read. I doubt Conan the Barbarian, would be nearly as popular as he is if Frazetta didn’t draw those covers? I kind of miss cover illustrations that are works of art in their own right.

Suppose humans developed into two post human subspecies.

1. Cybernetic based transhumans: they are the wealthy 1 percent that survived the singularity by merging with machines thus becoming pretty much inseparable from their tech to the point that they are no longer biological in nature.

2. Gene manipulators: the poorer classes of society that lacked the resources to buy all the advance tech based augmentation, and thus have to resort to relatively cheaper forms of aguementation gene doping and outright gene editing to survive.

One is the ultimate merging of man and machine while the other could eventually become the ultimate biological life form which combines the best attributes of every creature that has ever existed on this planet.

What kinds of cultures would arise from each subset and which ones would survive a conflict between the two?

I have a book I've been working on. It's unconventional in that it has illustrations in the book. If I go the traditional publisher route I probably won't get much control over stuff like cover and interior art right?

What kind of creature would make the ultimate human predator? I'm writing a story that touches on this theme and it got me thinking. If I were creating a specialized predator specifically designed to hunt humans, What would I come up with?

Preferably ones about ecosystems and flora and fauna.

Writers' Corner / Looking for Cool Dragon Alternatives.

I'm writing story and I'm looking for a big mythological creature to serve as the final obstacle to the heroes goal. I didn't want to use a dragon because that is kind of played out.
