General Discussion / Disappearing for a bit
« on: March 22, 2015, 03:59:28 PM »
Hi all,

After a difficult six months health wise I'm (hopefully) going to be going back to work soon. So real life is going to be a bit full on. Unfortunately reading will go on the backburner for a bit. So I'm going to take a few months break until I get back to full speed with real life!

See you soon :)

Fantasy Book & Author Discussion / Nightmare or dream come true?

Finally got to see this last Monday. I made the mistake of sitting between my husband and my son so I got comments in stereo - mostly about what they thought of Legolas! It's been a while since I read The Hobbit so I'm not sure how much deviation from the main plot there was (I know they have added huge chunks) but as an epic fantasy it was very enjoyable.

We got the extended DVD of the first film and have been working our way through the appendices which have been great so I'm embracing the whole Hobbit thing at the moment!

My Dad arrives in a couple of hours until Boxing Day so my internet access will be limited while I'm entertaining!

I hope you all have a great Christmas and that Santa brings you all lots of great reads for 2014!

Fantasy Book & Author Discussion / Where and when do you read?
« on: November 25, 2013, 08:36:32 PM »
According to Goodreads I've read 29 books this year. I'll squeeze a couple more in, maybe thre but that'll be it. But some of you out there read at a phenominal rate. How do you do it? Do you not have lives? I have a job and a 9 year old who take up my time. I only really get to read in bed, say for about 45 minutes before I nod off. I drive and walk to work so can't read on the commute.

So where and when do you read?

Fantasy Book & Author Discussion / Long Term reading plans
« on: November 15, 2013, 09:02:44 PM »
How far into the future do you plan your reading?

My husband told me last night he already knows what he will be reading in 2015 (yes really!!!)  :o :o

I only plan the next two or three books in advance!

Does San Judas exist or is it a made up name for somewhere else? I've been to San Francisco a few times but I  don't remember a San Judas.

Fantasy Book & Author Discussion / Fantasy and age
« on: September 12, 2013, 08:33:29 PM »
There have been a number of posts about the gender of authors and readers which got me thinking. Do you think that people have different attitudes towards sub-genres depending on their age? Also does an author's style reflect their age?

Fantasy Book & Author Discussion / Blood of Dragons - Robin Hobb
« on: August 05, 2013, 03:04:25 PM »
Just finished this and I thought it was a great end to the Rain Wild Chronicles. Everything came together nicely and I was particularly pleased with what happened to Hest and the manner in which it happened  :)

Has anyone else read it?

Has anyone read Itch by Simon Mayo. I really like Simon Mayo as a presenter. Is he a good novelist too?

To the end of Chapter 5 by my reckoning.

Well I'm loving it!  :D :D I reallly enjoy books set in alternate/parallel places. Especially when it's somewhere reasonably familiar. Sir Burton seems like an interesting character and as my second favourite genre is mysterys this is completely up my street  :D I'm already thinking this is a good Christmas present for a few people!

What does everyone else think?

Fantasy Book & Author Discussion / Fantasy Books from your childhood.
« on: August 31, 2012, 05:13:43 PM »
I know we've probably done this before but what fantasy books did you really enjoy as a child.

I've just bought The Dark is Rising sequence by Susan Cooper which I must have read when I was 11. I'm going to re-read it and then read it to my 8 year old son. I don't remember much about it but I remember loving it!

Fantasy Movies, Comic Books & Video Games / Fringe
« on: March 12, 2012, 06:30:28 PM »
Anyone watch this? I managed to completely miss it when it first aired but Sky have just repeated Season One and now I'm addicted. Of course, I can't find when Season Two is due to be repeated!

Really like John Noble in it and it took me a while to realise he was Denethor!

Sorry if you've already seen this:

Go to Google Maps and ask for walking directions from The Shire to Mordor.

Made me laugh!
