Fantasy Book & Author Discussion / Tamora pierce

I vaguely remember reading her circle magic books as a teenager but not much else, someone has recommended i get more of her books but i dont know where to start.

Has anyone read these? I got the first two as a random buy and am thoroughly enjoying the first right now. It's got its problems and little things that make me frown at it, but on the whole I like it.

I've just ordered the next two as well so I don't have to wait for them when I finish the two I've got.

Anyone else read them, thoughts??

Fantasy Movies, Comic Books & Video Games / remakes
« on: March 28, 2013, 09:30:15 AM »
Some utter doucheface linked me to an article saying Disney are Remaking 'Pete's Dragon' :( why do they insist on remaking classics? They have a TERRIBLE track record - Herbie, Parent Trap, Freaky Friday to name but a few.

What's next, Bedknobs & Broomsticks? Mary Poppins? Is nothing sacred!?

So, what do you think about remakes. Good idea or bad?

Fantasy Book & Author Discussion / Tad Williams
« on: March 08, 2013, 09:28:10 PM »
I was just given the first Two books in Tad Williams 'shadowmarch' series for my birthday. (Finally! Its not my birthday without books!!)

I'm curious as to what I can expect from them, I've not read any Tad Williams before though I did have a copy Of the dragonbone chair at one point. (Never got round to reading it, was sacrificed for space)

I've also got his 'Dirty streets of heaven' on my list (hoping my sister will oblige on that one) as I've heard nothing but fantastic reviews of it :)

I'm mostly just curious as to your opinions of him before I start these gorgeous looking paperbacks. :)

General Discussion / thanks & funstuff.

Not entirely sure where to put this, Gen discussion seemed the safest bet.

Just want to say a huge Thank You!

I've been here coming up 2 months and am really loving being a part of this forum.
Its so welcoming and a lot of fun! You've increased my TBR tenfold, introduced me to Authors I'd likely not have heard of or picked up otherwise, and generally given me somewhere I can relax and talk books without annoying everyone (I actually got fb messages complaining about all my 'nerdy shitty book crap' - not as nicely put as that either)

Mostly, Thank you for having me, thank you for accepting me and thank you for making me fear for my life everytime I venture near my TBR pile :p :)

General Discussion / Tell me something
« on: February 22, 2013, 11:47:26 PM »
I've been around the forum for a month or so now and thought it'd be fun to find out some random facts about everyone :)

So, tell us a random fact about yourself.

I hate Cheese. With a passion. Its disgusting, smells awful. Its ugly and makes me vomit. The smell alone makes me want to upchuck. Ugh.
I don't like a lot of dairy, chocolate is ok, but I can live without it. Milk is vile, though I have a little in my coffee, and dairy based deserts are foul.
I've never had a Pizza or Cheesecake or a milkshake.

Oh, and I can't dance for toffee. I have no rhythm :(

Links, Competitions and 'Stuff' / The Signed Page
« on: February 12, 2013, 10:32:13 PM »
Wasn't entirely sure where to put this, but as its a link, I thought maybe here??

I just got an email update from www.signedpage.com that made me hideously excited!!

'Pre-Order Now: Robin Hobb and Guy Gavriel Kay
by Shawn Speakman
There are three new books to mention, one brought into stock and two more with upcoming signings!

The first is A Natural History of Dragons double-signed by Marie Brennan and cover artist Todd Lockwood! It's a gorgeous book, a memoir of sorts detailing the life of Lady Trent, a woman with an insatiable curiosity toward dragons. Any dragon fan will love this!

That brings me to the first pre-order book. Blood of Dragons by Robin Hobb is the final book in her newest series—and you guessed it, it has dragons! Robin will be signing copies of this as she usually does and I'm excited about it. She is one of my favourite people. If you haven't read Robin's work, definitely give it a try.

The last book to mention is River of Stars by Guy Gavriel Kay. One of my favourite authors. A great writer who in Under Heaven introduced us to an ancient Chinese civilisation. He continues that tale in River of Stars. If you love great writing, this is a book for you!'

I know many of the members here are fans of Robin Hobb & Guy Gavriel Kay and thought that this may be of interest to them.

I ordered a Signed & Personalised Jacqueline Carey from Shawn that I absolutely adore. I tweeted her after I received it to thank her for signing my copy and she was lovely about it, thanking me for ordering it!! - no, thank YOU for taking the time out to sign it!
The books are 1st editions unless stated otherwise and shipped almost immediately after being signed. Its a site I often browse and compile a mental 'when I win the lottery' wish-list from :)

General Discussion / The pope to resign
« on: February 11, 2013, 11:12:24 AM »

Thoughts? Why resign now?? Is there some scandal that's about to break?? I always thought popes just sorta, died. Didn't realise you could quit that particular job.  - wonder what the retirement package is like. :

Fantasy Book & Author Discussion / Cover art
« on: January 26, 2013, 12:05:21 AM »
Am I the only person who gets really OCD about having multiple different cover styles for series'?
Not to mention all the differing sizes for different editions, for example I have a huge paperback 'last argument of kings' but 'the blade itself' and 'before they are hanged' are both standard sizes. It looks odd on the shelf and I get so frustrated! Its a series, they should all look roughly the same, with a few differences. But not size or a whole new style, that just looks daft!

Am I just OCDish or does anyone share this 'argh' with me??

Fantasy Book & Author Discussion / Jacqueline Carey
« on: January 20, 2013, 07:50:06 PM »
Jacqueline Carey is one of my favourite Authors. I was introduced to her books by a friend and immediately fell in love with them.

I'm just wondering if anyone has read the three 'Terre D'Ange' trilogies & her new Urban fantasy book 'hels agent'?

I pre-ordered a signed copy of 'hels agent' and wasn't disappointed, though its very different to the books based in Terre D'Ange its still a good read, though not what I expected!

I prefer the kushiel books, purely because I fell head over heels for the world & characters in it. Something about them just fit with me I guess!

I haven't read the sundering series or Santa olivia yet though, they've been on my wish-list for a while I just never seem to have the money these days!!

Introductions / An awkward hello
« on: January 19, 2013, 06:26:13 PM »
Well, Hi! :)
I suck at introductions, I always feel kinda awkward for some reason.

Anyhow.....moving swiftly on
I'm Laura, I'm 25, I have two children and am looking to sell them on ebay, or send them to a boarding school in mongolia (pm for details;) ) . I'm a loudmouth but quieter than people expect in person, I'm opinionated and prone to random bursts of nonsensical spaff. I'm also an avid reader. I don't tend to write reviews or anything because I can never seem to find the right words to express what I'm trying to say, others are far better at it than I. I've been reading FF's reviews for around 6mo's now but not been on the boards, I'm mostly mobile & don't like how forums load in the mobile browser. Using Tapatalk so a bunch of the features & functions don't show but I can live with that! :)

My favourite authors include Jacqueline Carey, Jim Butcher, Tolkien, George Martin, Douglass Hulick, Sanderson and Pat Rothfuss, though this list is likely to change with time. - about to start Abercrombie's first law trilogy and been told I'll adore them.

So yeah, that's my awkward introduction. :)
