Fantasy Book & Author Discussion / Authors and Inspirational Sources
« on: April 07, 2011, 11:43:53 AM »
Since the "Oldest Piece of Literature read" thread seemed like it was getting a little derailed, I thought I'd create a topic for where that discussion was headed and let the other thread get back on topic.

The discussion had moved to what outside influences had an apparent effect on an author's writing. The Bible had been mentioned in association with Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, and possibly Eddings and the Harry Potter series. Others had responded with references to Celtic and Greek mythologies in relation to some of the above mentioned authors/books. Some of the pertinent comments from the other thread are quoted in the next post.

So, what do you think has been the most significant source of influence for fantasy authors? Is there anything that inspires your writing? Do you think the inclusion of elements clearly reflective of older mythologies or religious sources is always intentional?
