Links, Competitions and 'Stuff' / Bookworm Giveaway
« on: June 12, 2012, 06:35:26 PM »
Hey everyone! Holy COW, it's been a while since I've posted over here.

Anyway! I thought I'd come back with a bang, and let you folks know that I'm hosting a giveaway over at my blog. I've got a couple of books, along with some book accessories, and a $25 Amazon gift card that I thought you all might be interested in. So check it out here: http://bit.ly/LGDffa

Thanks for looking!

So, at the beginning of 2011 I decided that I wanted to read 30 books this year (aparently, the usual number is 50, but every time I've tried that, I fail... So, lowering the bar, ahoy!). I'm currently on #28, I have #29 ready to rock and roll... But I'm not sure what to read for #30!

I would be much obliged if you folks would help me out, and help me decide what #30 should be.

In case you don't know these books, as far as I can tell, they range from fantasy to sci-fi and post-apocalyptic (though, I'm not sure what Wither is classified as, to be honest; it's just one that I eventually want to read). If you have any really strong opinions on any of these books, I'd love to hear them!

Fantasy Book & Author Discussion / Favorite Fantasy Series
« on: July 19, 2011, 04:11:31 PM »
I'm the vein of another thread floating around today, I'm wondering what your favorite fantasy series are? (No need to put a number on how many you enjoy; just go for it!)

My favorites:
(To everyone's dismay) Sword of Truth by Terry Goodkind
(Probably, again, to everyone's dismay) Black Jewels by Anne Bishop
Kingmaker, Kingbreaker by Karen Miller
Demon Cycle by Peter V. Brett

Fantasy Movies, Comic Books & Video Games / MMOs?
« on: July 19, 2011, 12:32:10 AM »
Do any of you folks play MMOs? I mostly wonder because:

01. Age of Conan has gone free to play. I've been playing since it started, and I love the game, but my guild is dead and I'm looking to move into a guild that is more active, with people I know.

02. I like playing MMOs, and if AoC doesn't pan out for me, I'd like to know what other people are playing, so I can move on. :P

So! Do you play (alternately, did you play)? Which MMO? Why do you like it so much?

Umm... So, did anyone else finish this, yet? 'Cause um... I definitely need someone to talk to about this. My brain... It exploded, I think, when I read the ending of the book.

Links, Competitions and 'Stuff' / Birthday Giveaway Contests
« on: June 07, 2011, 06:25:54 PM »
Well, hey there everyone! I wanted to give a quick heads up for some excitement going on over at my blog next month and, in addition, ask for a little help making it all happen. :)

So. My birthday is on July 31st, and I will be turning 26. In honor of my birthday, I would like to give gifts to the awesome people who follow my blog and enjoy my sites.

I currently have about ten items that I'm intending to give away; they include books, handmade gifts, gaming supplies, and a feature on my blog. I'm hoping that some of you awesome folks on here would also be willing to donate a goodie or two to the cause!

Obviously, this isn't a charity donation, or anything. I'm hoping that these contests will drum up traffic to my websites. Chances are, however, that those who have books or crafted items on the site for giveaway will also have traffic (and possibly sales) directed toward them, as well.

Currently, I'm looking for books in hardcopy form (preferrably autographed, if we can swing it) and handcrafted items. I'd like the giveaways to be unique, hence those "requirements".

If you're interested in donating anything, please email me at sisterites[AT]gmail[DOT]com. I'll get back to you as soon as humanly possible.

Thank you for your interest!

Writers' Corner / Romance?
« on: May 24, 2011, 04:53:00 PM »
So, I don't know about you folks, but I have come to the discovery that I'm fairly inept at writing anything that has to do with romance, and having it being taken seriously. Yesterday, I was given a prompt to use two characters and describe a kiss between them.

I took two of the characters from the story I've been working on, and then spent the next 950-some-odd words /working up/ to the kiss. I feel like this is just way too much.

Those of you who have written romance into your stories... Is it one of those things that you get better at as you go along? Because I'm finding it incredibly difficult to even get started with it, let alone continue with the scene without blushing furiously. :\

Writers' Corner / Prompt-Based Writing Group
« on: May 18, 2011, 07:46:10 PM »
Feeling a case of writer's block lately? Enjoy short drabbles and prompts? Looking for other authors to chat and write with?

If you said, "Yes! That's me!" to any of the above questions, you are in luck! Miss Darkshiara is hosting a prompt-based writing group through Google Docs. We have a couple members right now, and we're looking to get more people in.

How It Works:

01. Email jamie.provencherATgmailDOTcom, and tell her you want in the writing group!
02. Miss Jamie will send you the prompt each day.
03. You write, in the same document, your response to the prompt. That way, everyone can see and comment on each other's work.

It's that simple! So, come on by and write with us!

Fantasy Book & Author Discussion / Bad Review?
« on: May 09, 2011, 09:13:42 PM »
Let's say an author has given you a book of theirs to review. Do you feel obligated to give a good review, or do you feel obligated to tell the truth?

I'm currently reading a horror novel by a UK novelist, and I find that I'm having a hard time with it. I don't feel that the story is very well written, and I'm also having trouble with some of the terms that are apparently common in British English, but less so in American English.

I feel that people should know how I really feel about this book and how it's written, as opposed to appeasing the author.

What do you guys think?

ETA: Also, if you're an author, would you be more upset about a bad review that was honest, or a good review where it was apparent that the reviewer was grasping at straws to say something nice about your work?

Fantasy Book & Author Discussion / First Person?
« on: May 04, 2011, 06:51:20 PM »
So, I've started writing a collaborative story in the first person. While I'm not having any trouble with my writing, I've been told that I should read some first person stories, in order to get a real feel for how it sounds.

I'm at a loss on what to read, because I'm almost positive that I haven't read much in the way of first person stories.

Recommendations? I'd like to know what you've read, and what you've liked, that was in first person.

Fantasy Book & Author Discussion / Looking for a Book to Review?
« on: April 28, 2011, 06:18:25 PM »
So, you've finished that last book in your stack of "Books to Be Reviewed for Fantasy-Faction" and you don't know what to read next. Your personal library is looking a little worn; you've probably read that same book over there six times!

If you've got nothing to read, or coming close to the end of your book piles, look no further! Complete the small questionnaire below and add it to the thread. If you're an author looking for a reviewer, check out this thread in the Small Press & Self-Published section of the forum.

General Discussion / Business Cards
« on: April 27, 2011, 07:09:32 PM »
If you have business cards, where did you create and purchase them? I'm mostly interested in places that I can view and edit online. I'm looking to be moving soon, so I need to purchase new business cards with my new phone number, address, and web URL on them.

Also... How does one generally go about distributing business cards? Sounds like a silly question, but I don't network with other people in the field I'm going into (for shame, I know). I'm terribly shy at talking with people in person, especially if I don't know them. Any ideas on how to get one's cards out and about in the general populace?

Small Press & Self-Published / Want to Have Your Novel Reviewed?
« on: April 27, 2011, 06:08:50 PM »
So, your book is published, but you don't have many reviews. You've got the blurbs that other authors have stamped on to your cover, but that's about the extent of it.

If you're looking for people to review your novel, go no further! This thread is the perfect place to look for folks willing to read and review your book. Take the information below, reply to this thread, and someone will contact you if they're interested. You can then edit your post later on, and let people know if you run out of copies for review, or if you have new books releasing soon.

If I've missed anything, feel free to add it to your post. Good luck finding a reviewer!

Fantasy Movies, Comic Books & Video Games / Summer Wars
« on: March 21, 2011, 10:46:13 PM »
Have any of you folks seen "Summer Wars"? It was directed by Mamoru Hosoda (the same guy who directed "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time", which was also fantastic and amazing and if you haven't seen it, you should), and released in Japan in 2009. I was lucky enough to see it in theatres earlier this year, and I bought it straight away when it came to DVD.

Basic premise:
Set in a territory governed by a clan from Ueda the film's story focuses on Kenji Koiso, a timid eleventh-grade math genius who has been falsely implicated in the hacking of a virtual world. With the aid of upper-classman Natsuki Shinohara's extensive family he must prevent the real and computer-simulated worlds from colliding.

It is a fantastic film, and I highly recommend it.

Fantasy Book & Author Discussion / Sword of Truth Series
« on: February 16, 2011, 06:31:20 PM »
This is mostly to satisfy my own curiosity:

Most people here in the forum seem to dislike Sword of Truth. I would like to know, if you're willing to share, why.

I ask because I've read the entire series, and I'm eagerly awaiting "The Omen Machine" later this summer. But I seem to be in the minority around here... So I'm curious. :)

I hope you'll indulge me.
