Self Publishing Discussion / Important info on KDP Select
« on: May 09, 2014, 06:04:25 AM »
For all my indie author pals:

Here's something those of you with books in Amazon's KDP Select program might find interesting/useful: It now takes about 600 free downloads to equal 1 paid sale. Again that's a 600:1 ratio of free to paid. (And that's with some paid advertisement after the books come off of being free.)

This data is pulled from a group that does a bunch of give away events. I haven't done one of these events in well over a year, but I still get their emails. I just received an email announcing that they are discontinuing the event because of this info. They're finding it just not worth it any more.

Sharing because I thought fellow self-published authors should have this information.

Small Press & Self-Published / Book sale and New release
« on: September 19, 2013, 05:14:20 PM »
Hey guys! Haven't been around and active for a while. Juggling writing new books while being the stay at home dad to my new baby girl cut down even on my internet socialization. Things are starting to normalize, so I'll be around a little more often.

Part of the reason for my free time, is that book four in my Tears of Rage series is finished and available for Kindle and Nook. To celebrate it's release, I've put books 1-3 on sale for just $.99 across all platforms for the rest of the week. Get them on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Kobo, and iTunes .

The first three books are: First Chosen, Once We Were Like Wolves, and Arms of the Storm.

Here's what some other writers are saying about Tears of Rage:
  • M Todd Gallowglas is the real deal. - Brandon Sanderson
This is really great stuff...Intelligent storytelling, adult situations, and a magic system with a history and weight. - James Rollins
Tears of Rage is a fantastical gritty series about faith, dedication, fear, and perseverance. A tale for the times we are in, with realistic characters forced to face their own flaws that are just as dangerous as their enemies. Read it. - Damon Stone
For anyone interested, here's a link to my bibliography page, to save you the trouble of typing into a bunch of search engines: http://www.mtoddgallowglas.com/bibliography/

Great to be back

For the next few days, First Chosen, http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0055I14BG, Book #1 in my Tears of Rage Sequence is free until 5/31. This is the last time it will be free, as I'm taking it out of the KDP select program.

"Tears of Rage is a fantastical gritty series about faith, dedication, fear, and perseverance. A tale for the times we are in, with realistic characters forced to face their own flaws that are just as dangerous as their enemies. Read it." - Damon Stone, Fantasy Flight Games

"This is really great stuff!" - James Rollins

FIRST CHOSEN is the story of Julianna, a noble from the conquered kingdom of Koma. In her moment of greatest need, she frees an ancient god, Grandfather Shadow, from his thousand-year prison. In his "gratitude," the god names her his high priest and commands Julianna to lead his people to greatness once again. Unfortunately, it is a capital crime for any of Julianna's people to worship one of the five ancient gods - the punishment is not just execution but also the destruction of the soul. While evading Inquisitors of All Father Sun and the followers of the god of death, Julianna must learn to use the vast power that Grandfather Shadow has given her in order to survive long enough to unite Grandfather Shadow's fractured people.

And so begins, TEARS OF RAGE a dark, epic fantasy about the power of faith and belief, where even though the gods can inspire these qualities in mortals, it is those same mortals that truly control the religions that form from any god's divine inspiration. It is also a swashbuckling tale of political intrigue where men scheme against each other and the gods, and how friendship, loyalty, and faith can help people persevere through the darkest times.

Self Publishing Discussion / New Sub-Categories on Amazon
« on: May 17, 2013, 09:22:55 PM »
Hey everyone.

I noticed that Amazon added a bunch of new sub-lists in the Science Fiction and Fantasy categories in the Kindle store. I recommend taking a look and seeing if your books might fit into any new categories, especially if they are less competitive than the ones your books are in now. You might be able to get your book onto a bestseller list by a simple list change.

I've had some success just using the sub-category list title as a key word in each of my book's KDP profile. I'm playing around with it across my titles today. I'll keep you posted on how it goes.

On another forum I'm on, we started the Fantasy Character Cage Match thread. I thought the folks on Fantasy Faction would enjoy the plain silliness of it.

Just throw out a match up between two characters from pretty much anywhere because it would either be 1) aweSOME or 2) silly (and awesome.)

Here are some of my suggestions and the titles they are fighting for:

SciFi Bad-Boy of the Galexy
Han Solo vs Malcolm Renolds

Whiny Vampire boy of the Ages
Edward vs Louise

Fatal Four Way for the Dark Lord Title:
Darth Vader vs Saruman vs Voldemort vs Octavio Salvatore (I couldn't resist sneaking one of my characters in. I think he could be a contender.)

Joss Whedon Bad-ass, Kick-your-ass Hawt Chick of the Year Triple Threat:
Buffy vs Echo vs River Tam

Swashbuckling Criminal Mastermind with more than a dash of snark.
Vlad Taltos vs Locke Lomora
Special guest Referee: Tyrion Lannister

For Swordsman of the Ages, I'd rather see:
Jaime Lannister vs Madmartigan

Angsty Hero that bitches about being the hero more than anyone else we've ever heard of:
Luke Skywalker vs Rand Al'Thor

And just because I want to see this beat down:
Edward and Jacob vs Spike and Oz

Small Press & Self-Published / Free Books

I was going to wait until I became a more active member of the community before trying to push my books on you guys. Unfortunately, I've been swamped finishing my, making it a challenge to get on and participate in the discussions.

That being said, I don't want you guys to miss out on the chance for free books. I've got a few for free on amazon right now. So, without further adue (or however you spell that French word):

Knight of the Living Dead http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004YR54LU - Zombies invade a Renaissance Faire, and it's time to go Medieval on them.

Halloween Jack and the Devil's Gate http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005XJ0V7A - A fantasy steampunk adventure. Where's your lantern?

First Chosen http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0055I14BG - It's like Three Musketeers meets A Game of Thrones.

These are all available for Kindle. Thanks, and I hope you enjoy them!

Introductions / Greetings

I'm M. Todd Gallowglas. I discovered Fantasy Faction via Twitter and I'm very happy to have run across this wonderful little corner of the web. I've been lurking a few weeks and decided I wanted to become an active member of this community both as a fantasy reader and writer.

I am a self/indie writer with several book available on Amazon. I am also a professional storyteller at Renaissance Faires, Celtic Festivals, and other events. I'm looking forward to joining in the discussions and  getting to know everyone.
